Subject: Mirroring Geometry

FreeBass ( ) posted Wed, 02 May 2012 at 11:27 AM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 5:21 PM

I hope it's not too much to ask for, but I'm looking for a script or util that will easily mirror a Poser figure/ prop's geometry. (Rendering & mirroring the image is not an option). Take a pair of shoes as an example; assume I found a really cool shoe on a freebie site ('cuz I wouldn't wanna pay fer a single shoe). I would like to be able to uv/ group/ rig that single shoe then flip it to complete the pair as separate figures and save myself from having to do it all twice. Any ideas or suggestions?

I would also like to know about mirroring morphs; I've seen scripts to mirror morphs w/in a single symmetrical figure (right to left), but I wonder if they would work (or if there are others I haven't seen) on a separate full object w/ identical but reversed geometry.

TIA

I believe these products might be of help:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/content-mirror-for-poser/80640

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/poser-tool-box/87010

I've used both author's stuff personally, and both are top-notch, both in quality and support. Check and see if they will do all you need.

Anyone else with a tool I've missed?

Yes, the Poser Tool Box has that option. You can mirror about X, Y or Z axis.

For those on a budget. This method involves a bit of work, but it's free.

This seems to work for me as a free way of mirroring an obj. It is not quite exact to the n'th decimal point, but close enough for me. What follows is instructions for mirroring across the x axis, but it should  be obvious how to adapt it to mirror across any axis.

Load a poser 'square' primitive. Import the obj file you want to mirror, with all import options deselected. Let's say your obj is named "MyThingie". Once imported the obj has become a prop (=has transform channels and material settings). Parent MyThingie to the square. Select the square and in its Properties click on its 'xScale' numeric field. Type in the value '0.0001', and press Enter.

From the file menu export your prop, adding "-Morph" to the name, eg "MyThingie-Morph.obj", with only the 'Include existing groups...' export option selecte. Delete the square, then Restore MyThingie (Ctrl+E). With MyThingie still selected, from the Object menu, use 'Load Morph Target' to load 'MyThingie-Morph.obj'. Express the morph at a value of 2.0.

Export MyThingie as "MyThingie-Flipped.obj", with only the 'Include existing groups...' option selected. Delete MyThingie from the document. Import MyThingie-Flipped.obj, using only 'Flip Normals' in the import options. This is your final mirrored object. Save it with whatever name you want to use.

You can also do it in Wings, which is also free :). Object mode, duplicate the object, with the object selected, Flip X or whichever direction you want to flip it. Then do an absolute command Move and then + or - the coordinates.

jancory - thanks for that one .That'll save hours of work! C5 doesn't alway create a good mesh right when you flip.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
