Subject: Reality Render thread. A new beginning.

I'm certainly happy some reality users have been posting pictures of Dawn.  Certainly solidifies my decisions on her.  She seems to be a good idea gone wrong.  Who knows, maybe in four or five years she'll be as common as V4; but, I just don't have the spare cash to be an early-adopter or unpaid beta tester.  I've been pretty quiet around her because I've gone back to using poser full-time since the release of R3 and Poser 2014.  I had forgotten just how flexible and how much of a joy it was to work with V4 and Poser.  Not to mention the thousands of dollars I have in V4 content.  True, studio has its autofit and that was one of the selling points for me; but, now that there's the tighten/loosen fit morph tool as well as the droop morph tool, I doubt that I'll ever go back to studio unless they toss that idiotic d-form and go for more vertex morphing tools like poser has.

That being said.. I see plenty keeping the faith with the DS/R2.5/Lux route and am seeing a ton of fantastic renders on DA.  For those of you who haven't used R3 yet; you're in for a treat.

Hi guys,

I've run into a bit of a texture mishap with Victoria 6 that I know I've had before with Genesis 1 (visible seams), but I just can't remember what I did to get rid of it.

Here's an example:

Any suggestions anyone?

It was a pleasant surprise to find those OptiTex freebees work so well on Genesis2.

Now I am hoping this has nothing to do with scale, because adjusting it could potentially ruin the fit of those wonderful dynamic garments.

Cheers!

Erik

erik-nl ( ) posted Sun, 11 August 2013 at 1:59 PM

Hmmm, could be I've found the cause.

I just noticed I didn't slide the 'texture size' to be collected by Reality all the way to the right as I normally do in the Reality interface.

I've started a new render to see if that was the cause; I'll let you know if it was.

Cheers!

Erik

bobvan ( ) posted Sun, 11 August 2013 at 2:55 PM · edited Sun, 11 August 2013 at 3:10 PM

Yeah I notice right away if I forget to adjust texture size

erik-nl ( ) posted Sun, 11 August 2013 at 3:04 PM

Yep, that was it.

Phew!

I am considering buying the advanced dynamic cloth plugin, but I first wanted to be sure those (some of them old) garments work on Genesis2. And so far they do, which is great!

Here's another example with Victoria 6:

In this one it's the hospital gown (for V4)

Cheers!

How hard is it to make the jump from DS to Poser? I tried some version of it years ago before I tried Daz and Poser was very confusing.  I never got very far with it.

So what are the advantages of Poser (besides that they already have R3 available)?  Is the animation any easier to work with?

I'm getting more and more curious about Poser myself, truth be told. Not sure about the animation bit either, so that's rather important. I know it has a 'walk designer', so surely it has some form on animation tool(s).

Until now I had never used the subdivide option in Reality/LuxRender, but now I've seen how it can make or break an image!

Of course the difference can only be seen in the full-sized version:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/media/folder_247/file_2463868.jpg

I had to apply quite a bit of JPEG-compression to comply with Rendo's 512 kiloByte rule, but the difference is obvious enough I think.

Didn't expect the poke-through though.

The difference in colour must be related to the number of samples per pixel, I broke off the non-subdivided render when I saw what mess it was turning into.

Lessons learned! (again)

Cheers!

Erik

I was about to go all 'Smoothing Modifier!!" on you Erik, then I saw the Dynamic Dress part.

The knee issue was a bit of a surprise, espeically on Genesis. Could be specific angle or the pose itself, but this comes from a devout Gen4 user, so ignote it :-)

Love the sheer look on the dress, but much agreed, the rumples really killed effort #1. I haven't used Optitex in quite awhile, but when it works, it works well. If you want to repose (or animate), then its a gigantic pain in the a$$.

Said my piece and shutting up!

I've uploaded a test image of Victoria 5 Nichole textures on Genesis 2 / Victoria6.

I was curious how it would look, and used Callad's settings as a guide for a first try.

Doesn't look half bad, I must say!

No clones, hardly any tweaks Bob.

You just need to switch the UV-set for Genesis 2 (Victoria 6 in this case) to V5 in the surfaces tab of DAZ Studio, that's all. But (obviously) it only works with textures that are based on V5 UV's, and apparently not all Genesis textures are!

There is a Genesis Female UV set and some Genesis textures use the V4 UV, especially if they came with a V4 & Genesis morph in the same product.

G2F Supports a Base Female UV set, not sure if it is the same as the Genesis Female Set supported by G1.

I'm having an issue with a V4UV on G2F at the moment (see RDNA), not sure if it is related to the normal map I have applied or not. A bit more investigation required.

So far I have tried to apply these Genesis1 textures to Genesis2/Victoria6:

Michelle: didn't fit

Joanie: didn't fit

Riley: didn't fit

Keira: .dsa extension, must be converted first to see if it fits

Gaby: does fit (nice large file sizes, with lots of crisp detail)

Tory: does fit

and of course V5 Nichole and V5 Valerie, the preliminary results of which you've already seen.

I am now running some renders using Gaby textures; they look natural and realistic on V6 also, quite contrary to the promo pictures that came with them.

Cheers!

What options do you have for UV Set on the surfaces tab?

The Lana texture that comes with G1 is in fact a V4 map. The V5 Bree texture for G1 is a V5 map, while the Bree for G2 is a G2 Base map. G2F Base maps are not compatible with G1 Base Female Maps and vice-versa.

The texture files don't change the UV mapping automatically, or maybe they set it wrong. Have you tried manually setting the UV Set?

M5 definately won't fit.

As I explained earlier to Bob: "You just need to switch the UV-set for Genesis 2 (Victoria 6 in this case) to V5 in the surfaces tab of DAZ Studio".

So yes, I manually change the UV Set for these textures.

Victoria 6 offers three UV-set options in the surfaces menu.

The Genesis2 Base Female and V6 UV's don't differ greatly, things mainly move around in the eyes/forehead and nipple areas when you switch between those UV sets.

V5 textures are completely off with Genesis2 and V6 UV's, as are V4 textures.

The only other UV option you get with Victoria 6 is V5 UV's, and V4 textures do not fit onto those either.

So it's just a process of trial and error to find out what textures work with Victoria 6 and which ones do not.

Tory textures are hardly worth bothering as far as I can tell, not for close-up work at least. Gaby is a bit 'bland', or featureless, but that could also be an advantage in some cases. Sadly the edges around her lips are very sharply defined, which I think is ugly.

The Vianne textures that came with the Victoria 6 package are a bit of a surprise. I had not used them before, but they do look good!

I am making kind of a catalog now because I was losing track of all those texture sets and settings, and for practical reasons ended up using just one over and over again.

Cheers!

There is a product which provides a V4 UV set for Genesis2 so V4 textures will work with G2F. That's why I asked what options you have. As you can see V4 textures work equally well on V4, Genesis and G2F.

A lot of textures in Genesis products are in fact V4 maps as IIRC V4 & M4 Shapes for Genesis were provided free with a magazine not long after launch.

That's interesting! Can you tell the name of that product?

All the pushing and shoving of pixels that are forced to follow a UV pattern they were not painted/projected on should (at least in theory I think) lead to visible stretching, compression, and/or warping, should it not? Does it, as far you can see?

There seems to be a colour change visible between G2F hip and leg surfaces, in the graphic G2F is sitting on the chair. But that is less noticeable when all three models are in the same pose. I think it may be due to the normal map more then the texture.

I would have thought that since all 3 models are essentially the same shape and have similar surface areas, there would be minimal stretching or warping.

Texture Atlas, and for characters a bit further from the camera, lower the LOD and you can squeeze in 15 without choking the average system too much. Lux could care less about figure geometry, its the textures that eat up RAM.  If you can get away with it (distant characters), mapping each character's 29 or so textures all on one with TA will net you a full scene quite handily. I've gotten 18 characters in one shot before things got slow and crash happy--and that was before I learned to switch over to solid shaders in the preview window ;-)

There's a snow-tool also (forgot where) that is kind of a cross between true particles and repeat geometry. i'll see if I can find it for ya.
