Bob, I think that we are indeed having a civil discussion here and I thank you for your continued support in all these forums. I'm not sure what you disagree about but I hope I addressed it. If not, let me know your concerns here in this forum and I will do my best to address them.

Cheers.

This one is at 1000 spp and baked for just under an hour! (I finally put my kids' gaming computers to use! Network rendering works great so far with LuxRender 1.0rc4)

What do you think of the hair?

Hair's great.. and I LIVE by network rendering.  It would take all four computers in this house about 3 or 4 hours to get to 1k passes.  I'm getting almost stalker-ish with newegg and amazon checking on prices.  I had my new box parted out from several different sources.  When I found a new search engine for parts(nextag) I found out that 75% of my parts were flat out cheaper thru amazon than anyone else.  So I pieced the whole thing together from amazon and it was $101 cheaper than my previous best found prices.  Should have my new rendering box built and baking renders by 10/8.

Were all good Paolo. Thanks for understanding.  Im with you on how DS is handling their buisness. They are always in such a rush to produce newer versions of studio without addressing prior bugs / concerns. Perhaps thats just the way things are with this type of software. For example 4.5 loads scenes alot fatser but whats the point in it when you have to accept duplicate id messges that will prevent it from accomlishing what it is suppose to. The whole concept just baffles me..

Sharkbytes-BamaScans ( ) posted Tue, 04 September 2012 at 11:39 AM

callad.. thanks for the gallery comment.. i'd put about 60% of the quality of that shot completely depending on the quality of Rhiannon's work.  Hell.. even the lighting was simple.. daz's enviroment sphere turned into a light and a spherical hdri image attached.  The swimsuit is my own texture created for 3d-age's Peek.  With that and some tweaking from 2 or 3 of my go-to photoshop filters and voila.

Does anyone know where I can find an AI-upgrade for Genesis characters?
Their obvious incompatibility with decent, practical clothing that you see everywhere is something I can live with, but try to make them do the simplest of household tasks, and every time they will fail catastrophically!
The situation is getting desparate, for an example see the image below.
Fingers crossed Paolo can do something about this in the next version of Reality, I've given up hope DAZ ever will.

Quote - Sbt, the "inconsistent shading normals" was a message that appeared in the log window often and did absolutely no good. It did create a bit of concern in new users and caused hours and hours of my time wasted repeating messages of reassurance that there was nothing wrong with the scene. So I removed the damn thing from Lux :)

It's actually still there but it's been relegated to the debug messages; you need to pass the magic switch on the command line to see that sort of thing :)

Ahhh, peace. :)

I did notice, just read it wrong :-) Haven't gotten but a few hours of sleep in the last three days. You would think that one should be able to rest in a hospital, but I've deduced that they are THE WORST place in the world to do so. Some alarm is constantly going off, the furniture is made for easy cleaning and not comfort, or a nurse comes in randomly to check random alarm, makes a sh!t ton of noise, flips on the lights, etc etc.

Anyway back to the shading alerts, I often watch the log while the scene loads to spot issues with textures and whatnot. Your change did not go unnoticed!

It became sort of a quest to get one scene that the error triangle wouldn't pop up on. I thought I'd finally found the Holy Grail! Ahh, not so much, but its good to know why.

Are you talking about clothing limitations or genesis' flexability? I've really come to like the mesh smoothing and collision options for problematic clothing, using gen4 stuff on genesis that is. I still much prefer the Gen4 figures though, as things just fit better and morphs transfer with the Transfer Morphs script (and for whatever reason V5's face doesn't look nearly as good as V4's in my Lux renders). If you do it right, all your character morphs move into whatever clothing you are using, which comes in very handy for figures either outside of the posing limits or the clothing's included morphs. Getting a realistic pose takes a lot of work, and it's a shame that most clothing isn't as flexible in this regard.

With converting Gen4 figures to weight mapping and SubD, I've found a win-win formula that I just can't get out of Genesis, for my uses anyway.

I read it as requesting a brain for the character, trying for a smooch with the girl in the mirror - 1 way to clean it I guess.

My request.. moooooooooooooooooore shaders.. leather shaders and more metals and more glass and fur and basically everything you can do to give every single render that added bit of realism that only reality provides.  But seriously, leather, skin, stone and wood shaders would rock

I guess if standalone is out then this'll do.  I've actually just been messing around to get a good maple wood setup in reality for a render thats baking now.

My biggest request is the special until-now-hidden Callad Shader.  That's the one-size-fits-all shader that you apply to every material and makes your render come out looking like art.

I hate my impatient self!  Just started baking about an hour ago, even running networked with my old phenom x4 AND even networked to my htpc I'm getting about 10ks/s, at this rate if I leave it running til I get home tomorrow from work (hopefully about 6pm - 19 hours time) i've calculated it'll be at around 550s/p - no wonder I seem to do mainly simple portraits.

I blame Doc for pointing me in the direction of a couple of good kitchen sets, if I hadn't seen them (and then bought them) I'd be running a quick portrait instead of something more complex, there's 5 discreet mesh lights, quite a lot of glossy surfaces and lots of metal to reflect and it's quite a large resolution (1920x1080px).

Paulo, while your using your superman coding skills to make R3 standalone (hehe) any chance of either a patience module to instantly give the user some or an impatience module to make the render run 100x faster than is even possible but without any loss of quality? please? pretty please? do you like cherries? pretty please with a cherry on top?

Abi.

P.S. I'm bored now, I can't even watch a movie as the htpc is maxxed out and I've run out of books to read sigh

Quote - > Quote - That kinda sucks, but I think I can see the point they are trying to make. What you buy isn't really the product, rather license to use said product in your work. The license is like a software license in the sense that it is meant for a single user and is non-transferrable(usually). SO even though you have a single physical copy of the product, only a person who has purchased the product is licensed to use it. I know, kinda sucks, but if you are a content creator, it's good that someone is looking out for you with such policies I guess.

Sorry for your pain Sharky.

I must say it sounds like they were sort of apathetic about losing your business, which kinda tells me they didn't deserve it to begin with maybe.

As an artist, Bob, with what I just went through; I'd watch yourself.  Take pains not to make your facegens TOO realistic.  Singers, actors and comedians own the repro rights to their likenesses, also.  Even body parts... john holmes did.. and ron jeremy & peter north both currently have licensing agreements in force on the size and shape of their johnsons.  A buddy of mine who plays guitar loves eddie van halen.. likes him so much he painted a '72 strat to look just like EVH's red & white striped "frankenstein."  he did a really stellar job on it.. took a pic and sent it in a fan letter to EVH.  He got a letter back asking him to "repaint that thing because I don't want people to think I play a strat."

Sharky, I agree that anyone using celebrity likenesses should take a bit of care with how the images are presented.  That said, it is my understanding that artists (us) have legal protection (at least in the U.S.), when using celebrity likenesses.  As long as we are not making money on the celeb's faces, we are protected under some kind of "parody" law.  But of course, that's not to say that a celeb's legal team couldn't make life a bit uneasy with all kinds of threats.  Of course, one way to avoid possible trouble is to just present the likeness, but refrain from naming it; just let the image speak for itself.

(Disclaimer: I am not a licensed attorney, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.)

I remember one of Deanna Lund's (Who is the main  character in my series)  cronies who was a strict chrisitan on FB got all bent out of joint when he saw how I was dressing / depicting the character. He tried to see if he could do something about it. I told him its fan art tough shit. (He had got pretty nasty in his correspondence with threats and all) Also I was apparently friends with Jessica Alba on facebook a few years back and I started tagging her in renders of her being handled & manipulated by giants. She de friended me but never heard anything further then that. If it did become an issue, I have no problem creating an original series and characters. My fanbase would not mind so much as long as they see giants / giantesses handle tiny wimin they're happy..

Quote - > Quote - Anyone notice the when using a geo-grafted item such as an extra lim that they are not welded when Reality Exports it?

With the geografted DAZ female genitalia I always have to replace a low-rez mesh named something like 'Genesis Female Genitalia_SkinHip_63.ply' with the high-rez 'Genesis_SkinHip_63.ply' also found in Lux's 'Resourses/objects' folder, or I get a visible seam in the render.

So you could try to make a copy of the high-rez mesh, and rename it with the name of the low-rez one if you find such a double of your geografted item in your objects folder, and see what happens. MeshLab is helpful for a quick check of what's what.

Of course it is very odd that two versions of the same bodypart-geometry are used by Reality/Lux, but it's especially annoying that you have to manually replace the ugly low-rez one each and every time you set up a render containing geografted items.

Don't know if it's a DAZ 'feature' or a Reality/Lux bug though.

Cheers!

Have you tried using geometry shell?

Apply geograft to genesis. Create a shell for genesis, set its offset distance to 0 and apply skin texture

The shell is parented to genesis by default.  It automaticaly follows poses, subdivision setting etc.

Hide genesis/geograft before launching Reality.

LOL I know the sky is not quite lined up but the pic serves the purpose.  Those are From pretty 3d's suckretary's outfit. Yes skies of Reality and one mesh light set to sun pre set. Lots of face genned characters love that plug in! The guy wanted 8 characters in the shot but I think due to all the props and my being lazy to hide some stuff even with mem conservative and export only it chocked LUX up. Quote - > Quote - Just stopped my biggie render for a while, I think the computers need a break to relax for a few hours, here's a preview (how it looks thus far)...

The Lights above the sink have been turned off to reduce noise (slightly), I'll be left to run til the noise with them onn has gone too, may take a while though, this far it has been 21hrs & 590s/p.

I quite like the effect on the cupboards, also if I drop the overheads and use the sink lights as fill then I have to up the sink lights pretty high and it seems to overpower the left side too much, I may drop the cabinet lights very slightly but not enough to be really noticable (that is a similar effect to my kitchen - fake maple and overheads, at night with just the overheads on).

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them ago anywho.

Edit - just noticed, the image in the thread looks a lot darker than the fullsize on the pc or on FB - guessing due to the shrinking, eg. the sink is plainly visible to the left.
