Subject: Poser update?

Believable3D ( ) posted Wed, 20 June 2012 at 6:28 PM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 7:12 AM

Okay, this is odd.

The Poser update page is not showing any recent updates (since SR2): http://poser.smithmicro.com/updates.html

But when I booted up Poser (Pro 2012), I just got a notice that an update was available. I had the choice to say OK or to go get it; I chose the former because I prefer to visit the web site independently. But as you can see above... there is no update... unless I'm missing something.

I'm showing version # 9.0.2.21214

Never mind. I see it is 2.1, even though the update page just says SR2. They could be a bit clearer and more consistent.

I got the update notice too. I already have SR2.1 ;) Thing is, this is the first one I've ever gotten for PP2012 and it's for an SR that's a couple months old..lol.

It must be new then cause my number (with the SR2.1 released about 1 month or so ago) is 9.0.2.2124 I REALLY REALLY wish Smith Micro would put release dates on their service releases. Would make it a whole lot easier on all of us.

If you have SR2.1 (9.0.2.21492 or 9.0.2.21561) already you don't need to update. If you run any version earlier than that, go grab it.

Thanks..did it anyway just in case just before I saw your post ;) (went from 21492 to 21561).

Can I ask why there are two different versions of SR2.1?

uli_k ( ) posted Wed, 20 June 2012 at 8:30 PM

9.0.2.21492 had an issue with updating 32-bit only Windows Pro installations. That's fixed in 9.0.2.21561.

I got an update notification 24 hours ago, and dutifully got that done.  Scratched my head a bit, since it was called an SR2.1, which I already installed earlier this year.  So, this is an intra-version update, I suppose ...

Laurie: I've also thought the same thing (including again today) regarding the desirability of putting dates on service releases.

When I installed I got a lot of errors on the DLLs (wouldn't delete). I had to rename a bunch manually. Not sure what that was about... never needed to do that before.

well, ever other update I get be it driver or software has a date of release on it. Makes it real easy to know whether you have it or not ;).

Putting the version of the update on the download page would be nice...

Well, yes. Rather than simply SR2, it should read SR2.1, released x date. Installing this update should give you version x.x.xxxxxxx in your About Poser information.

Or something like that. The point is that it should be immediately obvious whether you already have the update.

An informal changelog providing a select list of improvements would be kind of nice too.

So is this what it is for sure?  I just got an update notice for P9 startup, that I did not get when I started yesterday?

I run 64-bit, so I suppose if the above is true, this is not needed, but will this notice keep popping up?  If so I may upgrade to avoid the nag.

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 21 June 2012 at 12:56 PM

Mine didn't stop until I upgraded.

Laurie

uli_k ( ) posted Thu, 21 June 2012 at 1:42 PM

If you receive a notice you're not updated to SR2.1 yet (9.0.2.21492+) and should update. If you have 9.0.2.21492 or newer installed, you won't be prompted.

Inability to update DLLs usually means that Poser, Queue Manager or FFRender aren't entirely shut down. So the updater can't swap out DLLs because they're still in use.

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 21 June 2012 at 2:01 PM

Um, I was updated to the first SR 2.1 and I got the message on Poser startup ;)

No less than 6 crashes today, since those doggone notices started.  That one way to get the public to update.  Have the updater crash the software!  ;-)   Upgrade here I come!

Designating on the download page the version number and release date and what the update addresses is standard practice, period.
