Subject: Which utilities, scripts, etc. do you actually USE?

ElZagna ( ) posted Sat, 14 July 2012 at 12:37 PM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 2:26 PM

There are some amazing utilities, scripts, apps, etc. that add some wonderful features to our beloved Poser. There are others, though, that aren’t quite so wonderful. This is usually because they (a) are obsolete, (b) don’t do anything really useful, (c) are incomprehensible or otherwise unusable, or (d) just don’t work.

I want to know about those that you just can’t live without. I am hoping that this thread will be useful to a broad audience, so with that in mind, I would like to ask that, in addition to listing the add-on and a link to it, that you state WHY you use it. That’s different from saying WHAT it does, although that’s fine, also. I want to know what problem it solves (“Don’t you just hate it when…”), what limitation of Poser it addresses, how you use it in your workflow, etc.

I’ve wanted to start this thread for a long time, but was finally motivated to do so when I stumbled upon Snarlygribbly’s SceneFixer this morning (thanks for the tip, basicwiz). It looks like an extremely useful tool. I haven’t finished exploring its features yet, but when I do, I’ll post a review here.

So, anyway, what are your favorite add-ons?

OS: Windows 10 64-bit, Poser: 10

Shaderworks Lights and Camera Guides (so I know where my camera is pointing and my lights are pointing and how far they shine out), Scene Fixer (because it changes lots of things on one go) and EZSkin (because I can't do a good SSS skin shader to save my life) by Snarlygribbly, Netherworks startup script (it autostarts any script you want when Poser starts - works great with the next script), Shaderworks Central Script Launcher (adds any script you like to a list in a window where you can just point your cursor, click and launch the script). Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

3doutlaw ( ) posted Sat, 14 July 2012 at 1:25 PM

Didn't see it in the other list, but Library Manager is very good (planning to upgrade at some point).  My other "most used" is EZ Skin, Morphing Clothes (seperate utility)   ...actually, that's about it.  I like Advanced Figure Manager, but it started causing a lot of error messages in P9, so I removed it from the auto-start.  (I miss the remove all morphs command, not sure how to do that otherwise?)

VSS - For changing mass amounts of materials, with the least fuss, or tinking with large amounts of materials over and over. My default load has a few VSS props with favorite settings so I can set up a scene quickly and get right to tweeking. My only issue with this script is I can't figure out how to get Synchronize and Designer buttons to be on my main Python Scripts tool bar.

Scene Fixer - I use it because it does many things, and it only takes up one space on my Python Scripts tool bar. It's also set up really nicely.

And most important script...

**Render Settings - ** it's included in poser and it's a must.

I could list another dozen scripts I think are fantastic, but I don't use them everytime.

Ok, lemme see if I can help you with this (and the credit goes to Snarlygribbly for showing me how to do this): First, go into your main Poser runtime, wherever you have it installed and migrate to Runtime/Python/Python Scripts. Locate the mainButtons.py file. Copy it and change it to AllScripts.py or something you'll remember. In the mainButtons.py (make a backup first), change the line I have highlighted and point it toward the new AllScripts.py...

Now under AllScripts.py, add the links to the python scripts you'd like to have handy...like my example. Save and reopen and you should have a main python scripts list with an All Scripts button at the bottom and when you click that you get a brand new list with your fave scripts on it. Theoretically, you can do this for many many lists...lol. Make sure you always put a link to the main buttons in slot 10 so you can always get back to the first python scripts screen. *Back up mainButtons.py and AllScripts.py (however many you have strung together). If anything should happen like they're obliterated in an update or whatever you'll still have them. You can see Snarly has already put the instructions in the script comments in my screen shot, and his are most likely easier to understand than I am :P. Laurie

Thanks LaurieA I appreciate the effort and this should be helpful to many that read this thread in the future, but the buttons within the VSS script seem a little different. I can, and have VSS in the mainButtons.py, just not the internal Synchronize and Designer buttons.

I also have a button in my mainButtons.py that brings up a menu that has buttons with common script makers, like Cage and Dimention3D etc. And to keep it all nice and clean subfolders in the python folder.

Scenefixer, EZSkin, D3D XL Library (because I have too many big runtimes and like to have two library windows open), Semidieu's Advanced Render Settings...

Those are the only ones I use for just about every single render.

I have several scripts but the ones I probably use the most are Scenefixer for fixing up materials for PP2012. EZSkin for SSS skin shaders and Library Manager because I also like to have two libraries open at the same time.

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 15 July 2012 at 9:10 AM

the ones I use absolutely every day that save me hours, are advanced library manager 2 and advanced figure manager by semidieu from rdna.

I also often use snarlygribbly's scene fixer.

oh now vilters - I am surprised!  You always steered well clear of those snake scripts.  Just in case a new version of poser came along and the maker didn't update his scripts and you became totallly dependant on them like I am.

Hehe.

Okay delete lights is one thing but I can up and down every light intensity, change depth map to all ray traced shadows etc using semidieu's script, all in a couple of seconds flat.  So why wouldn't everyone want to use these?

I can control shift a whole lot of things in a poser scene and delete them or move them or parent them with advanced figure manager, all in a second.

I can use part of a pose instead of the whole pose, eg a hand or an arm or lower part of body just in a couple of clicks using advanced library manager 2.

you need to also get olivier's art materials - it goes with this script.

My favorite scripts are:

Snarlygribble's 1. ezskin and 2. scene fixer (the whys have been discussed)

D3D's 1. figure to prop is great for converting conforming to dynamic without having to export and import. It keeps all the shader nodes and even parented props. I also have used it to reduce file sizes by converting all th figures to props. 2. Delete is a quick way to delete several items. scene fixer also has his I'm just in the habit of using D3D's script.

Cage's 1. hair to path hair styling script. It's great for styles the hair room can't do 2. hair settings to make sure all hair groups are the same.

The ones I use almost every day are - Change Gamma in Poser and then Shaderworks Figure Manager.  Camera Panel, Render Dots, Light dots and Scripts Autolaunch from Netherworks. I often use Material Tools, also from Netherworks as I like to thin out my Pose folders and covert the MAT files to materials and place them in a materials folder.

Finally, as I use V4WM I am a heavy user of Outfitter.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

well scripts are minimal - the Delete Lights that comes with, Delete Magnets by Ockham and SpawnFBM by D3d

On rare occaision scripts in PoserToolBox and Netherworks Hair kits for magnet manipulation

programs

PoserFileEditor, Autogroup Editor, Uvlayout, Uvmapper,  on rare occaision PHIbuilder, FileListMaker, NoteTabLight, LupusRename, MorphingClothes, Imageready droplet 'make jpg quality 100'

Rarely wardrobe wizard/crossdresser for some conversions

and then of course poser, pshop and c4d

as you can guess, I make stuff more than I render it. Sad state of affairs lol
