Subject: Best hair for a Lt. M'Ress style "mane"

Ali's "HR-086" is simply the best candidate for creating a M'Ress type "mane" I've yet encountered.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/hr-086/94931

Before buying it, I wrote Ali and asked how long could the hair be morphed in the back.  Ali answered by supplying a link to a freebie "injection" file to achieve the look I wanted.

After such a generous offer, I bought the hair as soon as I returned home.  I didn't even have to adjust its position when I conformed it to Aiko 3 evn though it's a .CR2 designed to fit Victoria 4.  With not too many morph adjustments, I achieved the result displayed here.

I want to thank both Ali for modeling this hair and Thalek for alerting me to the product.  Thank you, both!

Sincerely,

Bill

I'm not familiar with the M'Ress character,  but that's a really nice render. The hair looks great.

I like Ali's hair products too. I just bought the ponytail and am trying it out tonight. Good to see such a helpful vendor...

Thanks for sharing...

That's just perfect, Redfern! Well done! Looking forward to a whole slew of pix ;-)

Looks really good Redfern- although I am quite the fan of Star Trek-particularly the Old Series (TOS), I never saw this character until you started posting renders on Daz. Cartoon, yes?

I'm glad I was able to help, Bill.  I saw the initial version and said "Bill might like this."  Ali's new morph really helps, I see.

In brief, during 1973, Filmation (the animation studio probably best known for "He-Man" and "Fat Albert") released a cartoon adaptation of Star Trek that was overseen by Gene Roddenberry and DC Fontana, starred 6 of the original cast, with scripts from several of the original series writers.

Taking advantage of the medium, 2 exotically "alien" crew members were introduced, Arex, a 3 legged, 3 armed "Edoan", and M'Ress, a being sharing certain attributes with those of terrestrial felines.  They weren't treated as "comical mascots" (ala Scooby Doo)but simply as crew.  Because so little was done with the new characters, that mystery gained the interest of some viewers (like moi) over the years.

Attached is the one shot that came closest in appearance to the original character design sheets.  (The art and coloring tended to vary between shots due to the insane schedule Filmation had to endure.)  I'll leave it for you to decide if the hair Ali released resembles the cartoon art.

Sincerely,

Bill

Looks good.

I've been dithering about getting some of Ali's hair for ages. Never too sure how it's going to look rendered though from the promos.

Thanks for the explaination. I barely recall the cartoon series. I saw it for sale as a DVD collection in Best Buy awhile back and should have bought it. I recall it was not cheap. I like the new render too.

No worries.  CBS currently owns the television rights, so you can pop over to the CBS site and watch them for free (though you'll have to endure commercial breaks).

http://www.cbs.com/classics/star_trek_animated/video/

Note, M'Ress appeared in only 6 of the 22 episodes, and like Uhura, she had little to do beyond playing switchboard operator.  Plus, Majel's performance is less than stellar.  Before the show was repeated on Nick in the 1980s, my fading memories of the character were a bit "rose tinted" by favorable embellishments by Alan Dean Foster who adapted the adventures into prose.  The reality revealed in those 80s reruns left me a bit "wanting".  Thus the character as I've rendered her is admittedly, an "interpretation".

I was going to state you can watch the oiginal series, too, either the broadcast versions or the "Remasters" with the updated effects, but it looks like CBS has dropped those in favor of short clips.  Well, the used to be available.

Thanks!  That means a lot coming from a skilled practitioner of celebrity morphs such as yourself.

Bill

The hair also works well for recreating Shahna from "The Gamesters of Triskeleon".

Probably also works -amazingly- for recreating 80s glam rock stars!

Who's up for making a C.C. Deville morph? :D

Running a Google image search for Deville, I'd think the DAZ "Wild'n'Messy" might capture his 'do better.  His hair was just all over the place with locks and stray fibers cascading over his forehead.  At least, I personally didn't see any snaps with his hair brushed back.

True, but still, that mane could work for a generic rocker. :)

And here's the hair conformed to LittleFox's "Melody".

As with A3, I didn't have to "parent" the item.  It "conformed" to the proper position and all I had to do was scale the hair a little bit larger and adjust a few morphs so the hairline would align with the forehead.
