Subject: Missing mesh

charlie43 ( ) posted Thu, 06 December 2012 at 9:31 AM · edited Wed, 24 July 2024 at 4:30 PM

Ran across something ths morning I haven't seen before and I am sure there is a logical explanation. In edit mode, you can see the door casing and stairs I am working on.

door-casing

The mesh looks good and has been tweaked to make it as good as possible. As you can see, the door casing is composed of blocks of rock. The image is in wire-frame mode.

However, when tabbing into object mode, I get the following:

door-casing

As you can see, in the upper right corner it appears that the mesh separating the blocks is missing. FYI, I have a single knife edge beneath every block to show some separation of the blocks to make it look more organic. Could this be causing me a problem?

Any help much appreciated!

TIA

C~

P.S. - Looking at the image, I see I have some extra verts on the left side - will fix this to see if it helps! :D

Are you willing to share the .blend? It's hard to establish what's going on from an image...

That is just a graphic glitch, don't worry about it.  Switch back to solid shading and you will see the mesh is as it should be.

Select the object, then look in the right pane (N key) under Display. There should be an unchecked box called "All Edges":

Turn it on, and you should see the lines again. Somewhere in the last few releases, they seem to have made the algorithm that culls edges from the display more aggressive, but we can turn that off.

It turned out to be an adjustment in the edges defining the blocks. I'm currently taking the 3D Master Modeling course and learned a technique whereby you use the knife tool and form an edge close and parallelto the original edge. It adds depth and makes it appear more organic. @RobynsVeil - I'll post the blend if you wish to see it. @FigureSculptor - thanks for the tip. I will save for future reference.

Thanks, all...

C~

Sounds like you have it figured out, Charlie... 😄 struggling with sql and developing cross-platform apps in PureBasic  wish I knew what has happened to the Q7Basic guy... I'd rather compile in Qt than gtk... the tools are nicer.
