**Simple railings with quayside/urban/park (new/old/repaint) colour schemes**

Uploaded to Renderosity FreeStuff as ‘Railings01’ (also uploaded to ShareCG)

A set of four simple railing props for Poser and DAZ Studio that can be connected together to form a variety of larger railings by simply parenting, Y rotating, and X/Z translating.

Three colour schemes (quayside, park, and urban) with three ‘ages’ (new, old, and repaint) for each.

The ‘old’ variants use a very simple shader to combine the rust and paint in accordance with a simple mask image (in DS there are two extra parameters on the ‘Surfaces’ tab under ‘Diffuse’ for this - see next post for screenshots).

The ZIP contains THREE main folders: Runtime, Runtime (Extra DS Files), and DS Content. Poser users only need the first, DS users need all three. See the readme for more details.

(The basic constituents are PP2 prop files and MC6 material collections, with PZ2 MAT pose files for those who prefer them. But I’ve included DSA material presets, and modified material presets, so that if you load the props or apply the MAT poses in DAZ Studio they’ll automatically load the correct DS material)

Happy rendering!

Here’s the simple shader I used (Poser version).

The DAZ Studio Shader-Mixer-generated version is more-or-less the same, but I’ve put the main parameters onto the surfaces tab (and kept all the usual ones!). So you don’t need to open shader mixer to change paint colour, rust coverage, etc.

Wow! Great freebie!

Thanks!

Glad you like it. I enjoyed creating them.

There's a small problem (or a big problem, depending on how you want to use them) with the design - you can't use these railings on a slope, or around a curve. The fix should be quite simple, a couple of morphs in the PP2s. I've started work on that, and I'll post back here when the fix is ready.

I saw these and I immediately thought of the "host segment" sketch on Mystery Science Theater 3000 when Crow and/or Servo went OSHA crazy by erecting railings all over the Satellite of Love's bridge.  Far from beneficial, they caused Mike to bang his head and/or trip with every step he took.

Well, I tend to relate a lot of things to MST3K; odd, isn't it?

Sincerely,

Bill

I'm not familiar with it, being from the UK, so I had to do a bit of Googling - great idea for a (somewhat bizarre) promo...

"Is your Starship Bridge becoming too dangerous?

Health and Safety on your back?

You need more RAILINGS!"

Attached image is three renders from different angles - a few morphing railings positioned to form a more complex railing (I'm more-or-less happy with the new prop - it's just a pillar with three rails poking out, but with eleven separate simple morphs for the rails).

*...unfortunately sans starship bridge...  *   ;o)

Ah, I see you're in Thailand.  Chances are good MST3K never made it there.

However, if you're ever curious, one can catch full episodes (roughly 90 to 100 minutes without commercials) on YouTube and other video service sites.

Back on topic, a very practical item you're making even more versatile.  Love it!

Sincerely,

Bill

Found the videos, love the cheesy theme song! Haven't watched more than the intro yet though.

New morphing prop should be uploaded later today - just rechecking the rules of thumb for combining morphs.

Morphing Railing uploaded separately to [ ShareCG](http://www.sharecg.com/v/67073/view/11/Poser/Morphing-Railing-Add-On) and [ Rendo Freestuff](http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=70507).

Rules Of Thumb For Using Multiple Morphs Together

1) Slope morphs should work okay together with either Offset or Bend morphs, although the rails may look a bit flattened from some angles. You shouldn’t need to use the correction morphs.
2) Shorten-Extend should work okay with Slope or Offset or Bend morphs, but you’ll need to use a Correction morph as well:
- with a Slope morph, you’ll need to set Vertical Correction to about the same value* as Shorten-Extend
- with an Offset or Bend 90 morph, you’ll need to set Horizontal Correction to about the same value* as Shorten-Extend
- with a Bend 45 morph, you’ll need to set Horizontal Correction to about HALF the value* of Shorten-Extend
* Same sign for Offset/Bend Right or Slope Up, opposite sign for Offset/Bend Left or Slope Down.
3) If you follow these rules of thumb and it still doesn’t look right, fiddle with the correction morphs until it does!

**Railings02**

Second set of railings are now available on Renderosity Freestuff and ShareCG. Same principle as the first set but I’ve tried a slightly different approach to the Rail Adjustment morphs. I’ve also included a ‘Single Rail’ prop to give an alternative way of making railings. More info on the ShareCG page (and in the readme if you download).

The textures are procedural, so no texture images included (although everything’s UV mapped and there’s a texture template included).

Please note: the steel cable shader can be quite temperamental, and what works with one lighting setup, camera viewpoint, and distance may not look any good with different lighting, viewpoint or at a different distance. But it's worth fiddling with, because when you get it right it looks quite nice! Attached image is an example after fiddling in DS3
