Subject: Should there be a Poser Animation only section?

Saxon3d ( ) posted Mon, 04 March 2013 at 9:45 AM · edited Mon, 30 September 2024 at 11:15 PM

In my opinion, I think there should. Not only to try and learn from each other on the specifics of animating in Poser, as opposed to other animation programs, but also to help showcase what is ( or isn't) possible in Poser alone. I also think we should have a dedicated Youtube or Vimeo channel, where Poser animators can post their work. The recent thread by thinkcooper made me think that maybe it was time to really get serious with some animation.

For the people who say, "But there already is an animation forum", that's a bit like asking for help with Poser SSS from a DS User, or iclone. Poser has its own way of doing things, and I believe it might be a valuable asset to the community. Just sayin............

This has popped up before and nothing much happened.

Mainly it's just a matter of human nature.  Small forums tend to be self-extincting.

When you post a question in a small forum, the people who might be able to answer your question probably aren't going to read it, because they aren't spending time in a forum with very little activity.

Hi

I think a way to handle this might me a click box when you post that says this post is about animation in Poser.

Then you could have a search box that looks for posts about animation and see a list of posts on the subject.

I'm primarily interested in animation too, that's what I do most and I'd like an easy way to see other peoples posts about the animation process.

maybe make it a sub-thread of the main poser forum then?, it is after all 50% of Poser....

"Professional 3d Figure design and animation", it says on the cover ;)

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 04 March 2013 at 12:44 PM

I think a lot of Poser users can answer questions on animation while not doing animation themselves. I play with it from time to time but it simply takes too long on my system to render out a quality animation.

There are a few good animators at renderotica. Stimuli has done some great short pieces (not even erotic) and of course he does animated pose sets (mostly erotic ).

Perhaps just start the subject line with anim: for example ANIM: breast jiggle , how to ?

O do suggest that any animators get a book on basic keyframe animation , and a simple video editor. It does make things easier.

to be fair markschum and this is just an observation, i find it slightly incredulous to believe that the average poser user who doesnt do animation could answer many questions apart from a few basic ones. Reading through the forum threads, even experienced users express suprise when a tip on using the keyframe editor appears. lets face it, there are probably fewer threads on animation in the forums than pretty much anything else, and when questions are asked, invariably the "get a higher end app" answer apppears pretty quickly. Are you suggesting I move all my animation questions over to an adult site like renderotica?

Basic keyframe animation will cover general animation and keyframing techniques, what I want is somewhere that users can ask questions without being made to feel stupid, or being advised to read the manual a hundred times.

In the ten years I've been visiting these forums there have been a few gems of wisdom that are lost in the multitude of non animation related threads, and there always seems to be an undercurrent of "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, he mentioned Poser animation" as if it's something to be shyed away from.

That I think is the reason for as Ockham put it, "Nobody goes there", not asking for Nirvana here, but just a page where threads specifically related to POSER animation aren't lost amongst Daz, Carrara, Iclone, 3dMax, Blender, C4D, et al.

this forum is where users post everything to get the most exposure.  in some cases they aren't even active poser users, just posting here to be in the game, to appear relevant.  hence, questions about poser animation here are more on-topic than alot of posts.  as mentioned above, a poser animation forum would end up like the current animation forum.  at least here one would get some responses, even if it's from non-experts.

I think a good idea.

However.

Lots of Hexagon users here and a dead Hexagon forum.

Lots of Blender users here and little Blender activity in its forum.

My point is that the reason that current animation forum is so poorly subscribed to, is that it is too general. Try posting all the Poser forum render questions or material questions in a forum called "Materials" or "Renders" and see what happens. Sometimes being specialised has its advantages, and I'm not asking for a whole Poser Animation only forum, maybe a sticky purely for animation, and I'd still like to see a Youtube or Vimeo showcase page for Poser.

But I bow to the community, it's not in my power to create such a thing, if it was I would have done it already lol.............

I hear you Vilters, but at least they have the opportunity to post specifics.........I would also guess that most Hexagon related questions are asked in the Daz forums, and the Blender ones at Blender org. Maybe I should be speaking to Smith Micro or RDNA?

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 04 March 2013 at 1:51 PM

the Poser forum gets python script questions and technical stuff on rigging, yet there is a python and poser technical forum.

A lot of questions that I have seen over the years have been answerable by RTFM but they get answered anyway. A lot of Poser users seem to feel that the manual is just not with bothering with and thats just wrong. I will admit that I did read the Poser 5 manual cover to cover in the evenings when I first bought Poser.

I am not sure about RDNA, they are the site I go to for the material room questions with the NodeCult forum. Perhaps they have a dedicated animation forum ?

I am not suggesting that anyone go to renderotica. I am just saying that I know that three very knowledgable poser animators hang out there.

Putting a sticky for animation on this forum should be easy, allow me :

YO BASICWIZ !!! can we haz a sticky for animation questions ?  pleez.

I'm trying to make my point as eloquently and precisely as I can, i agree markschum, many questions can be answered by reading the manual, many can be answered in the general pick and mix forum of Poser, many will be answered wrong with the best intentions. My personal feeling is that Poser animation , the subject of many a heated debate, as recently as yesterday, needs pulling out of the poor cousin closet, giving a decent suit and being put on show. That is my reasoning in its entirety. Some will agree, some will disagree and many won't even read this thread because it contains the words "Poser Animation"

Sure thing, markschum and others!

I've established a sticky thread for animation help. Look at the top of the list. If this gets a lot of posts/traffic, then the case can be made for a separate area.

Let's see how it goes.

thanks basicwiz, my whole premise for this was following thinkcoopers link yesterday, it seemed like everytime a discussion on poser animation started in the general forum, it evolved into a catfight with "poser is cr*p" as a tag line, I'd like to see people post links to poser only created animation as well and help each other in understanding how to get the best from the half of the app they don't use...........................Saxon out

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 04 March 2013 at 2:23 PM

I believe Tripping the Rift was started in Poser. Certainly a lot can be done with it. There are applications far better suited to production though.

There ya go , a start at least. Lets see how it goes.

monkeycloud ( ) posted Mon, 04 March 2013 at 2:24 PM

Great idea with the Sticky - sounds like it strikes the right balance for now between being in the forum where the action is, and being prominant and focused on the specific topic of Poser animation :)

This is so true, but I think the general trend is that there is less forum usage in general than there was 10 years ago.

What little usage there is is being diverted to software specific web forums i.e. Blender Artists as an example.

It also doesn't really help that the specific forums haven't really changed here, in a decade. Is a TrueSpace or VistaPro forum really relevant now?

TrueSpace is a Dead app. TrueSpace R.I.P.
Lightwave sold LW7 for $1000.00 in 2007.
TrueSpace forum is now the Lightwave forum.

Not much activity in any form here except Poser forum.

Well since one could reasonably accuse me of being one of the "trouble makers" in that other thread I will offer my thoughts.

That thread IMHO was Started by an official representative of   Smith Micro
predicated on the notion that it was debunking
the frequent claim by some that "poser cant animate"

yet I saw very little in the links posted that would help educate a newbie poser animator about the current animation capabilities of the program
One clip in particular had alot of imported Mocap ,Custom single mesh low poly figures that are not available to every one here ,and repeated use of the word "F*ck" In the tedious dialog.

You say:"I'd like to see people post links to poser only created animation as well and help each other in understanding how to get the best from the half of the app they don't use"

I agree so perhaps you can Exhort Smith micro the post some new current animation tutorials on their official website.

On my Vimeo page you can find some beginner tutorials for  basic poser animation
that I did a couple of years ago
and IIRC they were well received by users here looking to learn the basics like:
the graph editor
spline& linear interpolation
intro to IK.

BTW Understand I am NOT some Key frame Purists who is against the use of  imported mocap
but if a person has not learned the basics of the graph editor, then an other wise perfect mocap file but has the girls hand passing through her hips
or she is walking ten inches above the floor ,
will be unusable to the newbie.
even though such things are any easy fix within poser.

I am not suggesting that I am some "Guru" who's approach to animation should be the "gospel"

But Frankly if SM is gong to come here and post links to other people finished animation projects to promote poser
they should IMHO at the very least offer their own comprehensive tutorials
on the basics of creating animation in poser with the latest version of poser including HONEST and realistic advise on optimal settings for rendering the finished animations  WITHIN posers firefly.
as not everyone here has the money and time to buy and learn another program just to get faster quality renders.

Cheers
