Subject: Poser crashing upon launch

Paul Francis ( ) posted Sat, 12 October 2013 at 4:49 AM · edited Tue, 05 November 2024 at 8:12 PM

Hi folks; I got a new graphics tablet a few days ago and I think it might be the cause of Poser 2012 and the Beta version of 2014 I have not now working. They both crash almost immediately the splash screen comes up; the splash screen doesn't even have my name or serial number on it before it crashes. I got the following information out of the maintenance kog on Vista:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: PoserPro.exe
Application Version: 9.0.3.23027
Application Timestamp: 5075c597
Fault Module Name: Wintab32.dll
Fault Module Version: 2.1.2.1
Fault Module Timestamp: 501627db
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0000000000004e28
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057
Additional Information 1: cb43
Additional Information 2: 6977db552bc1120a209be47cc172453f
Additional Information 3: a722

So, it looks to my inexpert eye that "Wintab32.dll" is the problem. I'm currently unistalling Poser to carry out a full re-install, which worked when the problem first occurred a few days ago, but on re-booting the PC this morning, Poser again keeps crashing. Is the problem likely to be that "Wintab32.dll" is corrupted, or that the tablet is somehow causing a conflict with Poser? I just tried running Poser 2014 with the tablet disconnected ,but the same thing happened with "Wintab32.dll" in the log. Beginning to get seriosuly edgy - it made me shout at the cat, which I am not proud of.....!

If the first reinstall cured the problem, followed by resumption of the problem, I'd guess something is actively messing with the DLL.  It wouldn't be a single random corruption.

Did the system install some drivers when you first plugged in the tablet?  Maybe those drivers are causing the problem.  Search online for newer versions of the drivers???

I recently got an APPCRASH on exception C0000005 as well, but in P3dO. And some system applications like Speccy which could not report on my HW component temperatures anymore.

Search on the net: it seems somewhat random, not related to a specific application, other people have it with different applications like games etc. So no, it's not Poser.

The main cause is in some dll, attempting to mix the code and data area which is forbidden (access violation error). Things that might help:

 - other / newer drivers, especially for video (but in your case: for tablet?)
 - complete registry scan and repair

I did:

 - complete cleanup using CCleaner (free) - no effect
 - complete driver renewal for all hardware including motherboard (free) - no effect
 - PC Cleaner pro (not free) - no effect
 - WiseFixer (not free) - no effect
 - Repair All-In-One from tweaking.com (free) - solved all problems

Since the latter solved more problems on my 64-bit Win system, nightmare infection residues included, it has become my favorite.

All the best.

As per ockham's suggestion. Might be worth checking what the lastest version of the tablet driver is of the manufacturer's website. Sometimes these kind or errors are caused by a old version of a dll being used.

Thanks for these replies guys - at least I know where to start sniffing around....!  I tried the manufacturer's website (Aiptek) but the driver they have there appears to be older than the one that came with the tablet.  I'm going to try the tweaking.com idea and see if that helps.

Well, it didn't work.  I don't know what to do, other than to reinstall Vista and that would be massive.  I don't even know if it would fix the problem.

Jagg !!

I did a net-search for you - just to postpone the re-install misery.

Microsoft: http://www.appcrash.org/

Just someone: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/210693-appcrash-exception-code-c0000005.html testing memory, testing drivers, and suggesting it might be DirectX.

fingers crossed.

Well - after deleting the drivers for the tablet, but not being able to find any other trace of it on the system but with Poser still crashing, in desperation I ran Task Manager'  Lurking in there was a process called "ATWUSB.EXE", which appears to monitor when the tablet is connected.  I disabled this and Lo! and indeed Behold! Poser launched first time and every time since.  I managed to work out how to prevent ATWUSB.EXE from being loaded at startup, but can't find any way of actually uninstalling it, as apart from it running as a process, there appears to be no trace of it anywhere on my system.  I had a previous tablet from the same manufacturer which used to sit happily alongside Poser for years, so I'm going to install the drivers that came with that (I never throw any CDs away!) and hope that they work with the new tablet.  If all elase fails I'll re-install the new drivers and just hope that I can switch off ATWUSB.EXE whenever I need to launch Poser.  It's got me exhausted - thanks for all the advice and tips folks.

glad things work out till now, you might (using CCeaner or so) check your services and startups for auto-launching this atwusb on windows start - and kill those as well.

BTW - helping you is pure self-interest of course - when you have to rebuild your system, I have to wait all the time for your great images :-) LOL :-)

Hah! I've put a new image up; if it wasn't for the kind folks here, I'd be looking at a different outcome.  One benefit of running CC leaner and the other stuff mentioned is that my PC now whizzes along!
