It really depends on the style you're going for. You can go ultra simple or really detailed. I would suggest having a look at some of your favorite animated films or shows and thinking about which style you like the most and then try achieving something similar. For a character like Star, who is heavily anime influenced, this is particularly important, as there are hyper detailed anime figures and super simplistic anime figures - both valid design choices.
In terms of characters there's this school of thought in cartooning that very iconic characters approach a more sort of everyman/woman aesthetic and are thus more easily identified/sympathized with by a greater number of viewers. I feel that very iconic characters in elaborately detailed environments is an interesting aesthetic, as seen for example in Windsor McCay's 'Little Nemo in Slumberland' or Hergé's 'The Adventures of TinTin'. Out of curiosity ,how much detail is too much for toon like props, characters and such? Is there a standard to go by? I recently bought Star and it has me to thinking about making a few things but I'm so new to 'toon' that I am curious about it.
