Subject: HELP! HELP! I bought a new laptop and am having trouble opening anything!

PenelopeFlynn ( ) posted Fri, 24 January 2020 at 5:23 PM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 9:42 AM

I bought new system, an ASUS Strix 64bit 16G DDR4 1TB HD and 256G SSD. No problem with installation. I had my system backed up in the cloud and downloaded everything. I was able to pull up all my content libraries.... BUT when I try to open anything Poser can't find the files. I can't open scenes, models... nothing. Before I backed up my system I removed all the zip download files from the back up, but nothing else. Will I have to download everything all over again? Also, in the interest of full disclosure I am having a Windows 10 activation problem which I have contacted the dealer to assist me with (somehow Windows can't read my product key). With all this, what course of action should I take? I waited 7 days for the download. I am not going to cry over having to put in more time to get it together. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Update - I lust downloaded a freebie item for La Femme. I had no problem finding it in the content, opening it or conforming it to the character. But when I went to open an item from my downloaded files I got the same "File Was Not Found" message comes up.

When you say you can 'pull up the content libraries' do you mean in Windows or in Poser. If only in Windows, have you pointed the new installation of Poser to the runtimes as it will not remember any links.

I am surprised that you have an issue with Windows 10 activation, if purchased with the laptop it should already have been sorted. For new builds supplied with Windows 10 there is often no activation key as such but something called a digital license. For more details look at

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

"I'm a WRITER hornet3D, not a scientist!!" (imagine this is said in the best Dr. McCoy impression, ever!) Thank you for responding. So how, pray tell do I get my new installation to "point to" my runtimes?

I am sorry I was aware that I might in the position where I was insulting another user and tried to frame my comments accordingly, I clearly failed dismally.

If you launch Poser along with the library you will see in the top right corner of the library panel two stacks of books one with a plus sign and one with a minus sign. If you click on the stack with a plus on it another window will open saying 'browse to folder and underneath that 'add runtime' in the panel below will be a list of all the drives on your computer. Browse to the drive and folder with your content and select a runtime folder and click OK, that folder will then be added to your library. If you want to be sure it has worked click on one of the icons across the top of the library and a list of content will be shown.

I am not sure how you have your content set up so I will use my set up as an example. On drive 'M' I have a number of runtimes, one folder is called Dawn and inside the first folder is runtime, sub folders on the runtime are all the normal subfolders you would see, such as character, Poses, Props, materials and so on. To add this I would click on the plus stack in the library panel then browse to my 'M' drive select/highlight the Dawn folder and click OK. A new library will be added called Dawn. Now if I try and open a scene with Dawn in it this is where Poser will look to find all the Dawn related information. For a scene to work all the runtimes that have that content will need to be added to the library. If one of two pieces of content is not there Poser will show an error message saying a file is missing. In this case I suspect that Poser is not finding any files so the error report happens quite quickly.

As to the the Le Femme content, Poser installs with at least one default library, in the case of Poser 11 it is two, one called 'Poser 11 Content' and the other called 'Downloads' I suspect that the Le Femme content is in one of those libraries and therefore Poser knows where to find it. It now needs to know where all you other content is, either that or you need to move all you content to the Poser 11 content library. I would however advise against that as somewhere down the road a new install or upgrade could overwrite your Poser 11 Library and you will need to go back to the cloud to redownload everything.

I have been using a seperate library since Poser 6 just adding to it and linking each new version of Poser to the same library so this method has stood the test of time.

This might help.

Runtimes.jpg

In this case Poser will tell me that the library already exists for, as you can see from the list it is there along with all my other runtimes, but it should help show the process.

Thank you again, and I was not insulted. I am grateful. I will try this fix and see whether this is my problem or if it is something else.

If it turns out to be something else just let me know and I will see if I can suggest a solution.

Okay, so it seems that all the content folders and icons are here but all the files are missing. What do you suggest as my next move?

Where are you seeing the icons, in Windows or in the the Poser library?

I see them in the Poser library.

hornet3d ( ) posted Sun, 26 January 2020 at 8:05 AM

OK so that means that means Poser now knows where your runtime exist so under normal circumstance that should be all you need do do. What information is Poser giving you in the library.

Poser Lib.jpg

Any of the tabs should show all the content folders in the runtime, the number in brackets indicates the subfolders for each content folder so as you can see in the picture the character tab shows all the content folders. I have selected the roll down on the Dawn tab which now lists the 71 subfolders for character content in the Dawn runtime. Clicking the roll down on the Coflek Gnord shows the two subfolders for my Coflek Gnord content, Cyber Headsets and Exploding Collars and each one has two items.

Are you seeing the same sort of layout, if you are then icons are actually a representation of the files you need. If not then there would appear that your runtimes backup is incomplete they have not been transferred correctly.

If the runtimes are setup correctly this is what the listing should look like in Windows and this is what Poser expects to see.
