Subject: Oil Paint Filter?

Boni ( ) posted Mon, 12 April 2021 at 5:40 PM · edited Mon, 30 December 2024 at 8:34 AM

Hi everyone ...

I have PS6 ... and have all the suggested settings for using the Oil Paint filter. BUT the filter does NOT show up in Styles as suggested. It is in the upper partition in a category of its own. Whenever I try to use an action that requires the oil paint filter it goes half way through (constantly saying it cannot find "oil paint" throughout that time) and then crashes Photoshop. I have OpenGL enabled, RGB and 8 bit. I've used Photoshop since 1990 ... I just don't get it. Help please.

I just did a search, because I couldn't find it in my PS CS2, and this is what I found:

"select Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint to use the filter", so it's not in the Styles palette as you said was suggested.

I still don't have it, as I have a different version of Photoshop, but you may find it in the Filter menu.

My mistake, I meant Stylize. So I am still baffled. But thanks Miss B, you are always so supportive.

I try, especially in this case, as I would've liked to find it in my version of PS, but from what I've read online, it's been missing from several PS versions, and only recently came back.

So it sounds like the plugin is missing or the folder is incorrectly mapped. Try searching for it using Windows explorer, it should be located in C:\program filesadobephotoshopplugins or something similar. If you find it and it isn’t in that folder then you should be able to link to it’s location in the preferences under plugins

I will try that tomorrow, thank you so much!

I haven't done a search ... but oddly ... I did dig into the folders and didn't even find the filters that ARE in Photoshop. I launch and the expected (aside from Oil Paint) are all installed but they are NOT in any folder either inside of the program files for PS6 or the external files where I store downloaded filters, brushes, actions ... This is becoming more of a mystery by the day.

Oil Paint is there ... Program files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 bit)>required>Plug-ins>Filters When I launch Photoshop it is in a section above the standard "artistic, blur, brush strokes ..." list section where stylize is. I tried to copy and paste it to Plug-ins above the "required" folder, but it didn't show up. I may have to take this to Adobe to figure out. This is a little frustrating and I am so glad you guys are trying to help me.

Oh, glad you found it. I never thought to look in the "required" folder, but I only have CS2, so don't have a Plug-ins > Filters subfolder in my required folder. From what I read about the Oil Paint filter yesterday, it came back with CS6, so it's possible there's a whole bunch of filters in that folder that "came back" with CS6.

So here is the bazar part. WHY aren't my Action files recognizing "Oil Paint"? They keep saying it isn't there and crashing Photoshop.

Hmmmm, that is weird. Unfortunately I have no idea since I don't have it to check it out.
