Poser 12 F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 22 9:02 pm)
Welcome to the Poser Forums! Need help with these versions, advice on upgrading? Etc...you've arrived at the right place!
Looking for Poser Tutorials? Find those HERE
I like Blender's approach, an informative overlay on the viewport with file open and recent file open options etc that's banished with a workspace click... I'm certain there's an option to turn off altogether, just never seemed of importance to look for that. I don't mind a splash per se, if it's serving some user purpose. I think a Poser gallery browser via the splash is a nice idea, as I stated earlier. Or something similar. I'd much rather see that than store advertisements. Of course that would mean a lingering splash, but if it went the Blender route not really an issue. One particular splash that's pretty annoying is the Photoshop loading splash, but it's been like that for as long as I can remember.
That's alotta splashes :-D
I had my computer off for months, the one with Poser installed on it. And it fired right up when I started Poser again. It's Poser 11 though. This monthly check thing is vague. It's a bit concerning that files were changed without permission. The people that make the sketchbooks I buy don't stop by my house and look through my sketchbook or change pages ;)
This convo is drifting off-topic, but imho Adobe & Autodesk subscriptions are both curse words.
BUT When companies offer a subscription as an additional option for people who can't afford the full priced license, that's a whole new story. $400 is a lot of students or hobbyist, or someone looking to get started on a whim.

I was more than a little thrown when the new splash screen arrived, like many others my first reaction was a sinking feeling as I suspected a problem with my computer. Other than that I could live with it but it reverted back to the old screen when I ran the update anyway.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

Actually, it reverted back to the old Splash Screen on my Poser 12, and I haven't installed the update yet, so I think they did it before the new version was made public.

Ok, today, but just once, I've seen a sports car in the splash screen, while Poser was loading, and it wasn't the first launch of today... ???

I actually like the idea of changing the splash without warning, it's just a good surprise, no harm, always good to break the habit. Also I was wondering if the devs may be thinking about some kind of screen saver to showcase artist galleries, like ZBrush does, that's cool too!

A lovely woman? It seems that we've just started with their surprises.... ?

Even though my installation is in French, I think that you may find what you need with the two options I've pointed in green
And the last option will let you suspend the updates till a date of your choice:

One of the first things I set up when I got this laptop with Windows 10, but I have also ALWAYS set up updates to be "paused" for a certain amount of time. By default it's about 7 days, but I often update that for about 2 weeks. That's an "advanced" feature if I'm not mistaken. That way, if I absolutely have to leave the laptop on overnight, I won't have to worry about Windows updating without my consent.

I approach every Windows update with a sense of dread, particularly after I have had a M2 SSD, which was the C drive, die during one update. Not saying it died due to Windows 10 update but a real coincidence. I always use the update and restart option at a point where I have some free times so I can do a sanity check on Poser and my financial program to make sure they both work and try and repair if needed. I would much rather do this than do a update and shutdown only do discover later I have major problems.

I almost ran into this kind of problems: I changed my C drive less than 2 months ago. During the process of moving windows onto a new nvme ssd drive, the program discovered that the old ssd started to have bad blocks. If I'm not wrong, an ssd starting with bad blocks will more rapidly die.
The problem is that I had not respected my own rule: a drive, when used everyday or near everyday, should be changed between 2 and 3 years after the start. And the last had passed over that limit for 3 months.
Why 2 years? the official warranty in my country. It's only business.

I was lucky with my drive as the system had been built for me and I purchased an extended warranty which they honored and replaced the drive. I had not wanted to be without the my computer for the time it took to replace so I ordered a new one. When the replacement drive arrived I cloned it with the new, and now working, C drive. I theory at least I have that option if this new drive fails. I was surprised though as the drive that failed was a Samsung 970EvoPlus and it barely made it to two years.

The system I'm using is the only one I've ever bought, (in March, 3 years ago). And, IMO, as a pre-made computer, the components are often of a standard-level of quality, which means that their lifetime is expected on a mean value. That can explain why it barely made it to two years (mine was also a samsung, and I still trust them). But from what I've understood: often, the pro series are expected to be more resistant, and as such more expensive.
Which is why I put more money this time, but in two years plus a few months, it will be replaced ?

I have built almost all my systems over the years but they were pretty standard systems with the exception I always built them to be quiet. As I got deeper and deeper into Poser I decided I needed something with a bigger punch but that also meant higher costs. When I started looking at Threadipper CPU which cost about the same price as some of the complete systems I had built I chickened out and looked to have someone else take on the risk. An unexpected lumpsum pension payout gave me the money to be able to do just that. I picked a custom builder here in the UK where you can start with basic system and then change the configuration to suit your needs. They did a good job and I was happy both with the build, less so with the broken promises on timings. If I was to order again I would still use them but I would have do without the extended on site warranty which just turned out to be a very expensive insurance. When the PSU failed, another high cost component that failed, this time after only 14 months. it took over a week to even respond to my claim. In the end I purchased the PSU and fitted it myself and then got a replacement from the manufactures. Of course when Covid hit they refused to visit site any way, that I understand but there was no mention of a refund on the warranty.

In Switzerland, these processors are almost 4200 Swiss Francs... Woah Poser doesn't need all that: my old i78700K never goes up to 100%, except while Poser is loading, which lasts only a few seconds. I'd rather put this huge amount into 2 rtx3090....

I wish I could turn off the Splash Screen. I have other software that allows me to do that. I don't need the Splash Screen to tell me what software I'm loading, so why isn't there an option to turn it off altogether? The end user should have the option to see it if they want to, OR not see it if they don't want to.
