Subject: Using Daz Studio scenes in Poser 12

DocMatter ( ) posted Thu, 17 February 2022 at 10:08 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 3:28 AM

I found a scene here that I really want to use in Poser 12, but it's made for Daz Studio (all textures in iRay).

It's a fairly complex scene (lots of different textures), but nothing I can't find replacements for in me various Superfly material folders.  Is it doable?

I know the other option is to just use it in Studio, but I'm just learning it and all the existing figures I want to use (V4 and M4) are ready to go in Poser.

It's doable, but there will be hoops to jump through. I've heard good things about this script:

What scene is it?

It's a matter of how well the set converts over to Poser.  Since there is no existing app that can conveniently do the conversion with the exception of Ken1171_Designs DUF Prop Converter for Poser 12, you would need to manually convert the files between DS and Poser.  And to get similar render results, you may need to heavily use the Cycle nodes instead of the PoserSurface node.  You're talking major workflow time.

The script looks like it might work, but I'm on a Mac and the last I heard, scripts aren't working in Poser12 for Macs yet.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

If the script isn't working, you can export it from Daz studio as an obj (or a few if you want separate pieces) and then import them into poser. It's a bit of a pain, but doable. I just did a scene with Aslan court, because the room was so close to what I was picturing, I think the creator may have been reading my mind.

I think I'm going to take the plunge and try and use it in Studio.  I was reluctant to go this route because it seems I have to recreate all my saved figures (V4 and M4 with textures and morphs) in Studio if I want them to look right.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions!

As DSF Tools ($$) seems to run very slow for files larger than 1~~2 MB, I figured how to use DS' own tools.

Free tutorial, not optimised but works okay...

This is especially useful when object has many textures, as DSF Tools only exports bare OBJ, without MTL...

Just in case: this is a villa from Stonemason, imported form DS using the FBX format. True evidence: the mats need to be rebuild but I don't care as I can use Cycles.

But sometimes, FBX moves everything at 0,0,0. I don't know why, as I'm no expert, but in these cases I can use the Collada path, such as here:

This place, too, is a DS scene, imported using the Collada format:

You'll still want to go through all or most of the mats after using the DUF Prop Converter script, BUT it connects the diffuse texture map to the PoserSurface root node for each mat that has one. But I wish there was an option to choose to have either PoserSurface or PhysicalSurface root node. One less step.
