Subject: PC hard drive crashed...

marcwhosis ( ) posted Thu, 06 October 2022 at 10:48 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 9:33 PM

My PC's hard drive--that had Poser11 on it crashed a year or so ago--and I just got around to installing a replacement
drive.  I've so far failed to get anything off the old drive, so I'm ready to assume it's toast.
This PC has never been on the internet.

After installing on the new hard drive, I got the dialog box telling you to Activate it.
I followed the URL by punching it into my internet PC and it took me to a page for MOHO (?) animation software.
I assumed this was no website to deal with my problem.

So if anyone here has run into this, is there still a way to revive it or is it now defunct?
I'm simply assuming users here have had their Poser 11 for quite awhile and need not re-install it,
but perhaps a few did.  :)

Any help appreciated !

Christophe Grenier's free Windows disk recovery utility TestDisk can read mechanical hard-drive sectors/clusters directly, and (slowly) copy off selected folders. That assumes it is just the drive's headers that are corrupted, perhaps by a power-surge (often the case). Hopefully there is nothing mechanical wrong with the drive, such as nasty rattling or buzzing sound to be heard.

As for Poser 11, it sounds like you have the old Smith Micro version. So far as I recall, the old serial should work with a new Bondware version of Poser 11? You will also get Poser support for the 20 series NVIDIA cards, by making that move to the latest version of Poser 11. https://www.posersoftware.com/downloads

Thanx HartyBart, yeah, it's the old Smith Micro version.  I didn't have a problem inputting the serial, I think, but if I read your second para right,
Bondware?  Is that the company that the current Poser is made by (P12, if I recall).  It's just that there's no Smith Micro website to activate it now.
Can't recall if the new company started with P11...it's been awhile.

As to the HD, I think I did try TestDisk; didn't work either.  see, I was fooling around trying to create a 'double boot' system, and not knowing one jot about partitioning, It all went downhill from there.  I have the old drive in a USB outboard enclosure by Sabrent.  When you turn that on, it does make that usual spinning up sound, and no other unusual noise.  I put in on the computer it came out of.  Many months earlier, I attached it to a laptop, and the laptop 'saw' folders, but when I opened
them in Windows Explorer, they turned up empty.  At some point, the laptop, running Win 10, offered to format it, but at that point I wasn't ready to give up on 9 or so years of accumulation of programs, etc..

Yes, Bondware now owns Poser. They have updated Poser 11 to contact their servers rather than Smithmicro’s. You can get the updated Poser 11 at the link Hartybart posted.

Thanks, RedPhantom, I'll give it a go.  I only had time to look at the page HartyBart linked in, just last night.
So I see that you can input your license key there...I'll have some time tomorrow, so , thanks again.

Do I need to uninstall the version I've already installed, and then download the files from the Bondware site?  (To uninstall the likely older version from my DVD).
The instructions say, then, to "Run the program from the Downloads folder".  (As well as the PoserSupport.exe file).
Once this is installed, can the .exe files be moved to the Documents folder?  I usually install from the Documents folder.

There is no need to manually uninstall the previous version from your computer because the new installer will do that for you before replacing it with the more recent version unless you prefer to install it elsewhere on your drive.  The choice is yours.
