Subject: Is Poser Royalty Free? What about DAZ or Renderosity Store stuff

Last night i was surfing the channels on my TV and came across BET network and realized that the VJ on one of their shows looked way to much like a poser model. If you were to make any professional animation for sale to Television would Meta Creation or Whoever owns Poser now be payed a royalty for using their models? or are they Royalty Free? What about DAZ products or anything you purchase off of renderosity? I use 3D Studio Max and want to know if its worth my time purchasing poser4. thanks for any feedback in advance.

You can't sell their models and textures (or derivative models or textures that contain them) to someone else, but every personal or commercial work you create (animations, posters, images for web sites, and so on...) is yours. I asked DAZ about this some time ago and that was basically the answer. I think that it is the same for Poser. I hope I've been of some help.

As the license agreement states, but not in exact words. CL grants you royalty-free non-exclusive right to use poser to create, and animate scenes for any purpose wheter personal or commercial. As long as you do not re-distribute the actual model, texture, et whole or in part. For the legally impaired: Yes you can create and sell images as long as you dont sell or distribute the models. DAZ has a similar agreement. As far as Renderosity's freebies/marketplace items are concerned. Read the "readmes" included with the item for its license. If I'm wrong here, somebody correct me. This is what I gathered from the agreements.

Think it basically as something like Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. You use those word processors to write novels and sell the novels, but Microsoft and Corel don't get royalties because you used their word processors to write the novels. Poser is a tool, like a word processor. Anything you create from it (i.e., images, posters, greeting cards, post cards, etc.) is copyrighted to you. You just can't export the meshes of the figures that come with Poser and sell those, just like you can't extract the fonts of a word processor and sell those as yours. I hope that made sense. You may use all still and animated 2D rendered output as you see fit, as well as 3D Viewpoint files if you happen to have Pro Pack. There's no royalty to Curious Labs, just like there is no royalty to MS if I use MS Word to create a business letter. If you insist on paying a royalty, however, you can make the check out to A-N-T-H... :-) Anthony Hernandez Curious Labs
