You can also switch it off by selecting a prop or figure. The light indicator only stays on screen so long as a light is selected. As for telling which is which, if your lights are different colors, the indicator is the same color as the light. The indicator is also positioned identically to the Light Controls globe in your workspace.

I mostly work in cartoon + line mode and if I adjust a light I find the light indicator ring appears. Once I've worked out which light it refers to I can turn it off by unclicking 'visible' in the Light Properties box, but if I adjust the angle of view of the scene (by using that trackerball say) then it reappears. Is there any to turn the damn thing off for ever? I think it disappears if you render, but I don't want to do that. The manual isn't very helpful on the subject. Also, is there an easy way to tell which light the light indicator refers to without having to look at the properties of all of them?
