Subject: Wow... Poser can really fragment a drive!

I decided to defragment my laptop (Win2k on it) due to a noticeable slowdown in performance over the past couple of weeks, and I began with the 12GB partition that has Poser and a couple of small utilities on it. I was amazed to see a sea of red (red = fragmented blocks of the partition) there... about 80% fragmented total. I let the thing run, and it took roughly an hour to defrag about 5GB of stuff (that's the second amazing part - I actually have 5GB of stuff, 90% of which was Poser...) The machine has a 1GHz processor and 384MB of RAM; my last defrag on that partition was about 3 weeks ago. This led me to realize one thing: 'tis time to schedule these maintenance things more often for the portable! Fragmentation accounts for a lot of slow-down and wasted resource on your machine, so it may behoove you to set aside some time to defragment your partitions... especially the one with Poser in it. I notice at least a 10% increase in performance every time I defrag the critter; sometimes more. (Win2k, ME, XP, 95, and 98 all have built-in defrag tools - NT 4.0 users can and should get Diskeeper for free off the 'net, though you should know that Diskeeper's free version can't be scheduled with at. In either case, they're lurking in your Settings menu.) Heh - By the by, my desktop doesn't have this problem... it runs nothing but Linux, and at last check (some time last night), /dev/hda was about .05% fragmented after a year of continous use :) Regd's, /P

Damn....I need to defrag. Thank for reminding me. I haven't done it in 3 weeks.

I have mine set to DF ounce a week while Im sleeping. Yep I do sleep on occasion. I think a lot of us in here are insomniacs. LOL

LOL! Yah...I always forget because I am always awake. So not only are we 3-D Addicts...but we're insomniacs too. We really need a support group. ;o)

Isnt this the support group nikita? lol

LOL! Yah I guess....but people yell too much in here. It is hell on my poor little addict/insomniac nerves. (I'm kidding BTW) ;o)

I defrag every night. It's not uncommon to suddenly find 2 gig in the recycle bin either. The defrag gives me time to make a snack and bre more coffee. This is called being a "functional addict". And yes...I believe this is the support group.

Yeah... the laptop only has a 20GB hard drive, split into two partitions; I installed a 40GB external firewire drive, and it has plenty of room to shove goodies into as well - though I had to partition it into 2 20GB partitions. Now at the desktop it's a different story... though in either machine's case I've taken the time to burn all the extra Poser stuff onto CD-ROMs (got about 10 of 'em burned for just Poser so far...) so that if I need something (like last night - I realized I was completely out of trees), I can just load the CD, load the zip files I need, and when I'm done (or on occasion), I remove the directories I haven't used in awhile. I guess I just use Poser differently - An example is in the poses itself; I ahve only 20-25 pose directories in /runtime/libraries/pose (most made by Schlabber or Rauf - I ditched a good share of the default ones), but the variety of poses that I do have is so large, that I can pick one close to what I want and adapt the character from there. Also, additional textures and .obj files I would normally import anyway are outside of the Poser4 directory entirely; I've parked them somewhere else entirely on the drive. (/poser_resc and /3dobjects in case you're curious.) Since I'm used to building what I need on the spot (esp. props and structural parts), I just don't keep too awful much on hand. /P
