Subject: Manual geometry extraction?

Darkworld ( ) posted Tue, 19 March 2002 at 7:54 PM · edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 11:41 AM

been using cr2edit for geometry extraction but ive run into a bug. my question is, can anyone tell me how you would go about Manually extracting the geometry from a cr2, so that you end up with the bare bones cr2 pointing to the obj you have extracted in the geometries folder? im not afraid of a little text editing as i really have to get this project finished, and it would be good to know how to do it manually as a backup anyway. im sure there is some way you can export from right inside poser as an obj, then modify that obj so that your cr2 can just be pointed to it (and then of course you have to remove the v, vt, and f lines from your cr2). any help or guidance on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated :) thanks much, Brian

I would think that Traveler's tutorial on external .obj calls in Poser Prop Files should be close to what you want after you export the OBJ from Poser.

That tutorial is helpful, and its a great backup for prop files. unfortunately it wont work with cr2 files, only pp2. i need to extract the geometry from a poseable figure which is saved as a cr2 ;/

Oh. I hadn't looked very close, and thought that since the principle was the same, that the process would be similar. Sorry.

Darkworld ( ) posted Tue, 19 March 2002 at 11:17 PM

well i think it would be, but there are tons of extra lines in a cr2 for the different groups, and the tutorial assumes they aren't there since its dealing with a pp2. according to the instructions they would fall in with the other stuff to be deleted lol, so obviously it wouldn't work. i tried just leaving them in there and doing it the same otherwise but it just loaded a blank character, i mean there was no object on the screen even though i didnt get an error. i know there is a way to do it because anyone who sells poseable figures on DAZ does it every time; some of them use cr2editor, but a lot of them do it manually, and right now cr2editor (or the version i have at least) rips the obj it creates apart, which means i need to do it myself; which is cool as i should learn how to do it manually anyway

Take a look at Shar3D in the tutorials section for CR2 Autopsy Parts 1 - 4 by Kattman. That might help you figure things out.

cool i just downloaded it and will check it out. thanks :)

hmm, well those links do have a lot of information about the cr2 file, all about how it is built, doesn't quite tell me what i need to extract the geometry though

Darkword- Why don't you just open the item in Poser amd export it as an OBJ file? Seems to me I had to do this once, I just located the imbedded geometry lines in the CR2 and coppied and pasted them into another OBJ file, replacing all but the header. Did it in MS Word, if I recall. Was sort of difficult because there was hundreds of pages, but I think it worked. OBJ files can go to thousands of pages, incidently, but they are just text files.

yeah ive tried that and it didn't quite work; ill try it some more though, dont think i replaced everything but the header, thanks!

I've had a LOT of experience at this. To export your geometry, follow these steps: 1. Load the character in Poser and use the joint editor to zero it. That doesn't zero everything so select Body and manually zero the dials and make sure the scale dials are set to 100%. Then select the hip or equivalent (the top body segment in the hierarchy) and zero the dials there and set the scale dials to 100%. 2. Export the geometry to where you want it. There are two checkboxes that should be selected. I can't remember exactly what they say but one tells poser to include a group name for each body part, the other tells it to weld the body parts together. If you download one of my free conversion kits for Davo's figures, they have a sort of mini tutorial on this part of the process. 3. Modify the cr2 to use the external geom. I usually creat a new cr2 using a phi file (made with PHI Builder) and then just copy the geometry section of the new cr2 and paste it over the geometry section of the old one. On occasion I've done it manually. Posette or any of the Poser 4 cr2s should show you the desired syntax. Essentially, you just take the obj lines (they look like lots of numbers) out of your old cr2 and replace them with geomhandler statements. A reference to your new obj must be included at the start and finish of the geometry section. Hope that helps.

Funny reading through here I find my Autopsy listed. I guess a little more detial is in order. When I create my character models, there is always a base OBJ that was imported first. That is very important here. Open the CR2 that you had created and look at the top. All that custom geometry basically duplicates what the original OBJ file had. Now if your original OBJ file had every split into it's proper groups and materials this is easy. Using my Autopsy Part 1 you can see the difference between custome geometry and referenced geometry. You can actually remove all the vertice info and change each actor to a refernced geometry listing. When you get to the groupname you just have to be sure the name you give it EXACTLY matches the group name in the OBJ. Then as long as you have the proper reference lines pointing to the OBJ you have it all set. In the future this is going to get easier. If you have read about my Poser Wizard you know there is an OBJ ripper that comes with the original purchase. For a future free add-in there will be a CR2 OBJ ripper that will handle this automatically.

damn that sounds cool, id love a cr2 obj ripper lol =)
