Subject: Glory or Damnation....

This is not a photo of mine. It was taken by a friend from works Grandfather, whose name was Charles Collin. My friend sent me this photo after we had been discussing photography at work (inbetween casualties) I have just been awaiting his approval to share the image with you. It's called Glory or Damnation. Taken in the 1950's, Andrew (my friend) is not sure whether it has been manipulated in the darkroom, but apparently his forebear was very talented and had all the necessary darkroom equipment. I believe most of his photographs were left to the Museum of Newcastle (a mining town in New South Wales) I thought I would share this with you people, as I think it's pretty awesome, and thought you might be interested...

that's a nice shot and I'll bet he did a little judicious dodging on those clouds. but it's still a very nice shot.

First of all that's a great photograph. And it's just got
to be a photo-montage, which makes the image even better when
you realize that it was done strictly in a darkroom without
the aid of photoshop or somesuch.

I think it's a great combination of etherial lighting
(implying heaven) and a bleak barren landscape (implying
hell), but finding a hangman's noose on a dead tree with
a cross-shaped cloud over it in nature would be astronomically
unlikely, IMO.

Just think what he could have done with Photoshop! He'd put us all to shame! Or.... what if it's unaltered? I think I hear the theme from an old Clint Eastwood western (lol).

Firstly, mint image. I love it. Newcastle is also a city not far from myself where I concentrate quite a few of my photo's on.... so that must be a cool place for a start. And, as regarding this being a photomontage, I would find it highly likely that this is the original location for the noose - it's VERY much like the location of gibbets on the countryside areas of our county, where they would be quite close to the road or track on a hillside. That way it served as a visible warning for some distance, but wasn't stuck too near to a town or village centre where it would have to be looked at every day. Also, the fence and smaller trees look very much in relevance to the rest of the landscape, and the big tree has obviously grown putting up with the same weather - look at how they all lean and have grown the same way...... Astounding bit of photographic history, Punk. Thanks for sharing! (",)

just looks to me like he made a cross-shaped dodger and didn't expose the clouds quite as long as the rest of it (come on, has the ability to work in a darkroom vanished with computer technology?)

JordyArt ( ) posted Fri, 03 May 2002 at 6:07 PM

Yeah, I guessed....lol To be honest, I didn't notice the cloud last night, coz it was like REAL early hours over here by then - that's certainly darkroom work, even I concede that! lol (See? that's what happens to us guys with small screens, we only see half the image at a time and miss important details!!! HE HE HE) (",)
