Subject: Coon skin cap (Daniel Boone hat)

Blue Moon ( ) posted Sun, 19 May 2002 at 9:20 PM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 6:51 AM

Hello, I am in dire need of a Daniel Boone hat. My son's elementary school is putting on a play about Lewis and Clark. They asked me if I would do a graphic for the program and flyer. Does anyone know where I can find a Daniel Boone type hat?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 19 May 2002 at 9:31 PM

Did either of them wear a coon-skin hat?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sun, 19 May 2002 at 9:34 PM

I can honestly say that I haven't seen one. What figure do you need it for? The P4 Male? Michael? I'll take a crack at modelling the cap tonight, if you like. Do you want it all fuzzy? I can add transmapped fur to make it more realistic, but it would take a bit longer.

Blue Moon ( ) posted Sun, 19 May 2002 at 9:58 PM

Hi, I am not going to put the hat on a head.:) I am going for something very simple. More of a composite type thing (don't really have time for anything more this week). Canoe, feathers, hat etc... I would be ecstatic (and very much in your debt) if you would try to model something Little Dragon.:) I wouold love fuzzy.:) The play is on the 30th and they asked me to do it Friday, need to have it done by Wednesday. I was going to work on it this weekend, but my youngest was hit with a nasty bug so I was kind of busy.

My sympathies with regards to your youngest; may he/she have a speedy recovery.

Fuzzy it shall be, then. I'll probably have the cap ready tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday at the latest. Keep checking this thread for progress updates.

I can remember sending in a box top and $1.95 for a genuine Daniel Boon Coon Skin Cap from a cereal box offer! (well my mom sent it in cause my age was....well..... :> Good Luck with your project!

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 2:41 AM

I believe that Merriwether Lewis kept the Journal? You might want a nice large book, with a bit of tattering on the corners and a worn leather cover, as part of the image. Background? Their whole purpose in going was to bring back a description, after all. Carolly

Poser render with no postwork. This is about as fuzzy as I can make it for now. The real thing has longer, shaggier fur. Maybe with some better transmaps/textures/transmaps ....

Next up, the tail, followed by some morphs to make the cap a bit more asymmetrical and shapeless.

bikermouse ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 6:45 AM

don't forget about Squanto.

cooler ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 6:49 AM

Squanto was associated with the Pilgrims & the 1st Thanksgiving. I believe you're thinking of Sacajawea

The tail's done, and actually looks halfway decent from certain angles. Now for some morphs, and better textures, bumps, and transmaps.

Blue Moon ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 7:18 AM

You guys are wonderful!!! The cap is coming along beautifully Little Dragon. Thank you so much. I really appreciate this.:) That is a one nice canoe cooler Picked it up. :) You have some wonderful props. I also grabbed your tepi, and water skin along with a couple of other things. Thank you very much!!! Wonderful Wonderful idea hauksdottir. Daz gave a book away a while back and I picked it up.:) I don't have any old looking leather, but I will sure try to make some up. If anyone else has any ideas I would love to hear them. You are right I can't leave out Sacajawea. What do you think would symbolize her?

cooler ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 7:28 AM

well her name literally translated (depending on the tribal language) is either 'Bird Woman' or 'Boat Pusher' and when she accompanied her husband in the Lewis & Clark pary she was approx 16 years old & pregnant so there are a bunch of symbolic images to choose from.

melanie ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 8:01 AM

Whoa, as an Oregonian, I'd really love to have something like that, too. Will this be available for everyone? Melanie

melanie ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 8:02 AM

Oh,a nd can the tail be poseable, so it can swing around, left/right, front/back, etc.? What a great idea! I wonder why no one's thought of it before. Melanie

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 8:26 AM

If Blue Moon is willing to share, I'll put the cap in Free Stuff. It won't be a poseable figure, but I'm adding morphs so you can pose the tail to some degree. I might go back and redo it as a figure later; I've been studying Ajax's Easypose techniques.

Blue Moon ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 11:36 AM

By all means please put it in the free stuff Little Dragon. I didn't know she was pregnant. You can sure tell I am no historian.:) So where in Oregon are you Melanie?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 6:56 PM

If you look at the Sacajawea dollar, she is shown with her baby on her back in a papoose cradle.

melanie ( ) posted Mon, 20 May 2002 at 7:47 PM

Blue Moon, I live in Portland. I wonder how many Oregonians there are here in the forum. The Oregon Trail and Lewis and Clark are a huge part of this area's culture and history. I've been to Fort Clatsop, where L&C stayed with Sacajawea and her husband Charbonneau. There's a statue of her in Washington Park in the west hills of Portland, heading up toward the Oregon Zoo. It's been ages since I've been past it. I believe she's holding a baby, but I could be wrong. The fort has actually been rebuilt because the original is long gone, but it's on the exact spot and built to the exact plan and size as the original. Surprisingly, it's very small. Hardly any bigger than a large house. Melanie

I'm almost done with the cap. Just need to do a few more morphs to smoosh it into and out of shape. If the fur is too light-shaded for your tastes, it's a simple matter to go into the Materials panel and change the object colour on various parts.

Morphs can't cope with rotation well. Keep in mind that the tail will likely distort (become thin or fat) as you turn the Tail Left/Right/Up/Down dials. I've added a fifth tail morph to make the tail thinner or fatter; this might be used to manually correct the distortion to some degree. There simply isn't enough time for me to make it a poseable figure and still meet deadline, so that's the best I can do for now. As I said before, I might update it later.

It should be done before morning. Check Free Stuff in a few hours.

Blue Moon ( ) posted Tue, 21 May 2002 at 7:33 AM

Thanks you so very much Little Dragon. It looks wonderful!!!! Can't wait till I get home this afternoon so I can finish the composite. Melanie looks like rain this morning.:)

melanie ( ) posted Tue, 21 May 2002 at 8:00 AM

I got dowsed coming home from work yesterday. Thunder and lightning right over my head. What a day! Melanie

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 21 May 2002 at 8:59 AM

You're welcome, Blue Moon.

I should mention that during the process of making this prop, I was hit rather hard by the Poser parameter dial sensitivity bug. If you have any trouble turning the morph dials, it's probably because Poser has reset the Sensitivity setting for the dials to a microscopic value.

You can enter values for each morph manually by clicking on the number. You can also increase the sensitivity of each dial by double-clicking it and then changing the Sensitivity setting in the pop-up Parameter Dial panel.

Little-Dragon... what a great cat toy! ::very wide, very wicked grin::

melanie ( ) posted Tue, 21 May 2002 at 7:54 PM

Nu-be, sure, that counts. Now, if we can just get the folks east of the Rockies to learn how to pronounce Oregon. LOL Can't wait to use that cap. I wish there was a decent buckskin jacket with fringe on it to go with it. Maybe that's just the Hollywood image of that era. I don't even know if that's historically accurate. I'll have to look that up. Melanie

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 21 May 2002 at 8:30 PM

Buckskin jacket with fringe? Hmmm ... have you seen the Indian Chief/Warrior character at 3D Models Shop? (Page 3, 3D Humans)

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 22 May 2002 at 7:09 AM

ah dunno hauksdottir, that hat looks hungry.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 22 May 2002 at 7:35 AM

bikermouse, Skrogg would just flip it over it it got too fur-ocious. Hard to look threatening when you are on your back getting groomed by a cat. Uh-oh. Twice as many hairballs. :(

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 22 May 2002 at 3:10 PM

wow! that's no ordinary cat! are you sure you're not raising a mountain lion?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 22 May 2002 at 10:11 PM

bikermouse, I'm sure. A mountain lion would be very expensive to feed... especially if she also preferred Fancy Feast. Of course, I could supplement her diet with the occasional door-to-door salesmen and the kids who ride their bikes through my perennial beds. :)= There are mountain lions here in the Bay Area. When we go hiking, even in local parks, we have to keep an eye open and not act like prey. One of my friends photographed one in Mountain View, just 2 weeks after I'd been in the same park. ::sniff:: It wasn't starving. ;^) Carolly

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 23 May 2002 at 1:37 AM

I've uploaded a new version of the cap to Free Stuff.

As promised, it's now a fully-poseable figure, although I don't recommend that you use the Conform function with it. When you pose the tail, it sometimes un-conforms. It's more reliable to use as a parented item. Details are in the Readme file.

A tail-lengthening morph has been added.

You can turn off Visibility on each tail segment and just use the cap by itself. Or make the cap invisible and parent it to a character's hip for an animal-like tail.

I have some additional renders of the cap, which showcase these new features, in this thread.

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 23 May 2002 at 8:56 AM

This is an incredible treat! Thanks so much. I can't believe someone hasn't done this item before. Thank you Blue Moon for requesting it. This is so original. Now we can properly go hunting for those beaver pelts. LOL Melanie

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 23 May 2002 at 10:58 AM

Heck yeah! That's why we're called the Beaver State and the beaver is on our state flag. LOL One of the college teams is called The Beavers. Melanie
