What about signed, "limited edition" prints? I've read elsewhere that signed prints are much easier to sell. I'd suggest that part of the added premium of "limited" prints be used to ship the print to the artist to sign/number then forward to the buyer. Of course, the artist would have to keep careful records to maintain the integrity of the edition.

Cris - I'm getting the information from the printers. Should have it soon. Pricing and merchant/artist info will be available to the community on July 1st. Limited Edition is something we are thinking of adding down the road. Clint

Keep in mind that limited edition prints must then be that - limited. With real prints, the printing media is destroyed - the films, etc. When we did a jacket for the character artists in my division at Disney a few years back, the art was created digitally. The file was wiped clean to insure it was limited. I don't think you have to do that, but you have to insure that a customer feels they truly have x out of however many were printed and that they have something unique. Sometimes the signature alone does this. Sometimes the grade of paper. It has to be well thought out. Actually, Pablo, I've heard from friends who do this, that open inexpensive prints do better. Limited editions do well for well-known artists whose works are sought after. I would also be cautious because when I see people on the forums complaining that they can't buy a model, I don't know how much money they would have to buy a print, much less a limited edition print which are invariable three to ten times more expensive. I have good friends who have their limited runs still sitting for lack of sales and these are extremely good artists. It will also depend on the type of paper and inks used. I am sure Renderosity is trying to get premium materials. You can't make limited edition runs from Kinko Midnight Specials. :) It's a venture and when you try to sell it becomes an ad-venture. :) Thanks, Clint. The more info the better for people. Until that first print, we're buying sight unseen. :) Cris

Cris - Thanks very much for your input! I've seen the prints myself and was very impressed. They look fantastic. :) I'll be purchasing some for my home. Clint

Cris - good input. FYI, the source of my info came from a SciFi and Fantasy Convention board. In addition to the points you mention, the "audience" probably plays a big part in demand for limited prints. They evidently prefer the limited prints...but then, it doesn't seem that they're selling them at the 3 - 10 multiple you mentioned either. Also the "audience" here may grow if artists drive people here to buy their prints so I wouldn't limit the potential buyers to ONLY the forum-goers here. I only mentioned limited prints as another option that may generate sales without added cost to the artist (other than time) and R'osity.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2002 at 1:33 PM

Oh, the audience won't be limited. I have every intention of making them available through the magazine.

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2002 at 1:56 PM

sounds good Micheleh but the only place I see the magazine mentioned is here on the site. No ads or publicity anywhere else that I've been, so the audience may be limited anyway, I hope not. Rob

PabloS ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2002 at 2:08 PM

Yeah, I don't see the magazine sold or mentioned anywhere but here so your mag audience would appear to be a subset of the same folks that you already have as active members. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I was thinking that artists would send folks here from their personal websites to buy prints.

Micheleh ( ) posted Thu, 27 June 2002 at 2:14 PM

That's a good idea, too. Plus, we have never intended to limit the magazine to just the site.

well, thanks Clint, but what I wanted to know is how does a person submit for those and put them in the store? As I said before, I didn't see anything about it in the guidelines page or the upload page....if I upload an image, how do I choose that this is the format I want it sold as...and the price? It's not listed....one was 12 x 12 and another was, OH< Nevermind, I went to find out what the size of the other one was, and I see both of them have been removed....what's up with that?

You can't call it work if you love it... Zen Tambour

Aureeanna ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2002 at 6:17 PM

I've read that page twice Spike and it says nothing about OFFSET LITHOs that are 12 x 12 and can sell for as little as $15

ClintH ( ) posted Mon, 01 July 2002 at 6:24 PM

The offset lithos have been removed from the MarketPlace. Those have been in there a while and were hard goods shipped out of our office. We will not be offering this anymore. Audre is the artist. She has uploaded replacement images that will use the Digital Art Print guidelines. I will be releasing her replacement uploads over the next several days.
