Subject: Texture Bug in Carrara?

wolfdd ( ) posted Wed, 15 March 2000 at 1:10 PM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 3:47 AM

Hi, I imported a mesh from a 3DS file. This mesh represents a landscape and has 21,000 facets. I apply a flat mapping shader with a colour texture. It is shown properly in prewiev window. When I switch back to Assemble window the CPU use goes up to 100%. From now on I have a total slow down in Carrara. Every action, no matter what function or menu option I chose, takes 2 - 3 seconds until I get a reaction. Even when I close the scene and choose 'Open' or 'New' this slow down goes on. I tried texture maps in different sizes, different shader setups, no change. I could reproduce this effect with different objects. When the facet count is more than around 10,000 I have this slowdown. When I use these objects in other 3D software, there are no problems. On the other hand I worked with textured objects from poser, where the counter showed over 40,000 facets for the object and over 120,000 for the whole scene without problems. I am using Carrara 1.01 on a P III 500, 256 MB RAM with Windows 2000. Is this a known bug in Carrara? Any help is appreciated. wolfdd

wolfdd, Have you tried Importing the .3DS file into Carrara and then Exporting it as OBJ? Then Import this OBJ. .3DS files might slow Carrara down. Most of the Poser items/figures, if not all, are OBJ format. Just a thought. Out of habit I convert all my .3DS files to OBJ. Clint

Thanks. This idea was worth a try, but there was no change. I also converted it to .OBJ, using another program. The result was the same. After i use any texture map, Carrara slows down and nothing can stop this. I have to exit Carrara and start it again to have the normal speed again. I love to work with Carrara, but this bug really bores me... wolfdd
