Believe it or not, dragons may really have existed. Or at least what the people of those times *thought* were dragons. Here's a link to an interesting essay about the possibility that pterosaurs may have lived as late as the 17th century. Dragons are mentioned in the article. Melanie

Whew! I was worried that the essay might have mentioned that embarrassing incident in France. Had there been any cameras in the vicinity at the time, I would never have lived it down.

Ah. That would explain why the Illustrated London News got most of the facts wrong. I'd always assumed they had merely downplayed the story to make it seem more plausible.
