Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
We had 3 service releases for ProPack via download. :: I suspect that if the folks in Australia and Japan and Germany had to wait for that one-legged Irishman's brother to deliver CDs with the patch (all of which would probably have to go through customs again?), they would beg to be allowed to download it. Carolly
Sorry I agree with Carolly, being from Australia - I don't want to have to wait another week to 2 for the update when I can just as easily grab it online. Plus there's the added cost for packaging, handling and transportation. This can mean quite a bit as our dollar sucks in comparison to the $US :( Plus the installer patch should do all the installation for us - I'd doubt if we'd have to manually place files everywhere. But wait, what if I agree with both points??? I was talking with Starlet today about needing to create CDs, and downloading can get you there right away... so I'll root around that great little tuber of an idea and see if truffles turn up. I love a few glasses of Cab after dinner, should keep me away from the keyboard ;-)
Guarie, I think you misunderstood my post, unless you were replying to TalleyJC's. P5 is a huge application and, given the number of "bugs" repaired in SR-1 (Service Release 1) alone - plus any additional ones found thereafter, would mean that in order to install a perfectly working copy of P5, you would have to: 1. Install P5 2. Install SR-1 3. Install SR-2, etc This should not be a "major" issue, unless you have dial-up, but if someone's hard drive were to fail or if they get a new system and - for one reason or another - cannot copy over the patch files from the old one, this could prove to be an inconvenience. What I was suggesting is that instead of continually producing P5 CDs, that once the major bugs were remedied, that CL make available a P5 SR-? CD (where the ? would be the final Service Release) so users could install the updated P5 (incorporating all of the SR patches) on the initial install. Many software companies do this and it would seem to be the most beneficial to the community as well. CL could still charge for the CD, duplication costs, and shipping and handling - although one could argue that the patched P5 should be free since they already paid for a fully working P5 to begin with. Downloading large files on dial-up connections can prove to be tricky too. Some of the P5 user-base still have to rely on the slow 56k (well, actually 53k max in the US) connection as they have no other Internet options available to them. Therefore, if the size of the SR patches are too great, some users may not be able to download them at all.
I agree with both points here. At the moment I would be glad to see that one-legged Irishman turn up on my doorstep with my copy, he still seems to be lost somewhere between Dublin and my part of London. But I also agree about downloading being the pits on a dialup. I rarely get a rate above 40, 45 is good. And typically for BT when they made connection to broadband a special cheap offer it didn't cover my area.
The greatest part of wisdom is learning to developĀ the ineffable genius of extracting the "neither here nor there" out of any situation...."
CyberStretch I did misunderstand your point. Sorry. Now I understand and definately agree. I tend to burn all my updates off onto CD anyway after I get them so if my hard drive fails I have access to the files when I have to reinstall. (Get the idea I've been there before?) But for those not in the same position then the CD would be a good idea. Just as long as we still get access to the updates online while they produce them - then I'll be happy little camper down under :) Guarie
I am so used to downloading and istalling updates that I sort of forget there is any other way... I keep a CD-ROm with the updates to Poser4 on it and I just add them on as I download... Sending out a CD is an OK idea, but fairly expensive for a smaller company like CL. More power to you Steve if you guys decide to do it!
dial up isn't too bad if your paitient, and you have unlimited access. Though I like the idea of an updated cd, I (and it seems others) am used to downloading patches all the time, for games, os, hardware, apps etc...When reloading a system I usually map out what updates I have to install along with what apps I want back on my system. A cd down line would make things easier(especially for new buys) but it may be a long line...

Please Please Please....... What are the chances of new CD releases instead of Huge downloads? Having to piece together the software in its corrected form for something this large will really.....uh....stink.
