I am looking in to getting a 3rd 3D package to extend poser and bryce's capabalities. I dont think I will be doing much animation right now, mostly illustrations. I have heard of Ray Dream, True Space, Lightwave, and 3D Studio, but dont know which one to spend my money on. There is also I difference in price ranges for these packages so the package that offers "the most for the money" would be prefered. I dont want to spend money on unused features.

Ray Dream is good for a lot, Rhino seems to be easyer to me, but that may just be me, And it's only a free download version that was floated to me. I think you can get trial versions of Ray Dream also, but if I had tried both I think I would have gone with Rhino instead. (personal pref.)

Amorphium is good for "organic" looking models, as is Rhino. Rhino has a pretty flat learning curve which makes it pretty easy to pick up the basics. RayDream I've never used so I can't comment on that. TrueSpace is pretty awesome, and you can get free/light versions of TrueSpace 3 attached to some magazines - Computer Arts recently had a CD with TrueSpace. LightWave is another programme I've not used. 3D Studio MAX is a monster, it eats resources, isn't easy to learn, has a boatload of plug-ins, and is real expensive. But, it is really really good at what it does. For my personal preference, 3DS but Rhino is much easier to learn Paul

If you are considering pursuing a job in the 3D industry, I would suggest familiarizing yourself with either 3D Studio MAX, Lightwave, or Softimage. If you are a 3D hobbyist I would go with Truespace, if just for its rendering capabilities. I don't know if Rhino has as complex a raytracing engine. Or you might want to go with Vue, but the effects and realism you can pull off with 3D Studio MAX, are amazingly worth the price of the software. And there are about 300+ free plugins for MAX, and just as many professional plugins available commercially. Also, if you are running NT, you can network render with MAX, Lightwave, and Softimage. Employers in the industry will not take you as seriously unless you know one of these higher end 3D packages. The majority use either MAX or Softimage. My 2 cents, co(V)(V)union
