The design of a lighthouse depends largely on when it was built. Portland Head Light (1791, comm. George Washington), Maine, (one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world) is typical of older lighthouses with a single white beam, with a 4 second rotation. Many newer lighthouses have white and/or red beams, some with multiple fresnel lenses allowing for multiple beams. Wow, those were very usefull links. thanks Scott, Maine ceertaily has some beautifull lighthouses. I live in Maryland between Baltimore and Washington DC. Very close to Annapolis and The Chesapeake Bay. So I visited The Maryland Page also,And I was surprised to see we have many nice ones too. Hawkfyr

In my normal home in Crescent City, Calif, we have an old lighthouse that's quite a tourist attraction. One of the few that small town has. We're more sort of a last gas before leaving california kinda place. Anyway, the place is supposed to be haunted. It is abandoned due to the Navy having built the more modern, and far less aesthetic light on a pole and radar system to replace it. Damn I'm homesick

I've always thought they was somthing Magical aboout lighthouses. I would like to visit one sometime. But then again I live 20 minutes from DC and avoid the place like the plauge. although I have visited all the sites over the last 20 years. I feel sometimes I don't take advantage of the sites that are so close by. Hawkfyr

not too bad for me, my in-laws live in Arcata so I can go visit and hang out with good company. Did you ever make it to Fern Canyon? On the way to Crescent City there is a motel on the road that has an indian teepee, on the left, that dirt road takes you to fern canyon and it is AWESOME! Be a great place to get some footage now that I think of it. =)

Does anyone know about lighthouses? I was wondering was if some have 2 lights, like one shining out opposite sides. and if they do have 2, must they be exact opposite of one another? or could they be at right angles to eachother? any help welcome Hawkfyr
