Thanks very much, Roch222 and nu-be. I'll roll up my sleeves and give your suggestions a go. I'm not sure how to remove the shear... I know what it is, but I don't know where it is... but maybe I can find it. Also, I'll try some different camera angles and views.
It just seems strange that Peter's screenshots look identical to what I've got happening... and yet it's not working out. I can get the window cut out and the lights working nicely... but I still have levitating walls... ;)
Again... many thanks to both of you. I'm goin' back in...
:)
"First create a cube and position it on the far corner of the ground plane grid. Stretch it along the Z axis until it just disappears off the screen at the left. Now stretch it along the Y axis to a position as shown... "
That's how the tutorial begins... but even at this early stage, if I look at the Nano preview window... it's clear that the cube is hovering. In his screenshots, he's got the cube squashed flat at the very outside edges of the working window (on the farmost lines of the ground plane grid)... but his are not hovering... yet mine are...
I tried the get rid of the shear and then use the down arrow to land my wall... and it does land... but it "jumps" quite a bit forward into the center of the canvas when it lands...
Sorry... I'm not usually this much trouble... honest! ;)
I guess maybe I could try to go ahead and build the room with a little less depth than he shows in the tutorial...
As I mentioned.. I can get the boolean window opening with no trouble... and the lights... but because my walls are off the floor so much, the shadows are all jumbled up in the room and it's just not the ticket....
Thanks again for all your help, Roch222.... :)
Try placing your walls while in top view, it will keep them on to the ground ( Y axes ) as you move them. When doing non uniform scaling switch to object space ( white arrow under the transform tools on the edit palette ) Object space will keep the objects from shearing when scaling on 1 axes.
Are you, by any chance, moving the walls with your cursor? That would explain the situation, I think. Try moving them with the little cube with arrows you can see up there in the Edit menu. also, by pressing the ALT key while moving the cursor on the cube gives you a better control of the movement.

I was using the cursor to move stuff around... which is obviously frowned upon. If I squash up the cube and re-position it with the edit tools, it works just fine. Also, checking out the different angles proved that my roof was kinda hanging off one side... it's difficult to get the gist of exactly what you're looking at... for me, anyway.
As an interesting (well... that's subjective) side note... Bryce stops my computer clock for as long as the program is active. Maybe I don't have enough horsepower to run it properly (PIII 800 w/384 Mb ram) but at least it has the calming effect of not realizing how the hours are passing by while dabbling around in there... ;)
I certainly have a new-found respect for all you guys who can wrestle gorgeous stuff out of Bryce with apparent ease... I don't believe I'll be contributing any images for a few years, at least.... lol!
Again... I surely appreciate all the help... thank you!!
:)

You can also move object with the arrow keys for X/Z movement and the page up/down for Y movement. I only use the edit pallette for resize and rotate and the arrow keys for movement. That's what's so great about Bryce is there are several ways to do the same thing and you can use whatever is most comfortable for you.

I'm attempting to do Peter Sharpe's tutorial, "Streaming Light Rays Room Construction" (http://www.petersharpe.com/Construction.htm) but I can't seem to get my walls to stay on the plane grid when I move them to the far edges of the room. They hover... and if I use the "land" arrow in the object palette, they land more into the plane's center.
Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? I'm following the tutorial to the letter... but my walls refuse to stay attached to the floor...
Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ever so much! :)
