Description

Hi y'all. The northeast region of Scotland is littered with these ancient sites. This one is from about 2500 B.C.There were piles of ashes found in the center of this ring and near that large flat stone that was originally flanked by two large upright stones. This created a 'frame' for the full moon at a certain time of the year. These sites were always situated away from the living areas of its unknown builders. It is believed to have been a burial/cremation site for them. When you stand there,(it is on the top of a hill at the beginning of the highlands),and look around you,you see you are surrounded by a ring of beautiful blue mountains. It's like they created a stone ring at the center of the ring of mountains. It feels indescribably awesome to be there and the silence is profound!I hope you can get at least a little sense of that from my pic. This was taken the same day as my Kildrummy ruins shot,(or ruined Kildrummy shots, lol). So it was raining here as well. But fortunately it was not a heavy rain, so it didn't spoil the shot. It's my first real panorama and not one I faked,(LOL) by cropping.Hope you like it.Wish I'd done the full 360 for you.Oh well. Have a great weekend everyone. Thanks for looking and of course your comments are always appreciated!!!! :)-Marlene

Marlene, this is seamless perfection! I see we have the usual cloudy skies we come to know so well through Rita (sossy) photographs of Scotland. I just love sites like these. It brings time and reality into perspective and how little we reperent as individuals when we realise the scope of time. I hope the fence was there to keep the cows out and not the people. I look foreward to your next travelogue photography,as it allows me to think i am there with you sharing the incredible experience. Have a great weekend and stay cool in this heat.

It is gorgeous! The sense of silence and vastness does come through - you captured that perfectly. The overcast skies lend a somber tone that makes it easy to envision the ceremony you describe. What a wonderful presentation, Marlene!

This picture certainly gave a sense of place, setting, silence and age. You wrote, "It's like they created a stone ring at the center of the ring of mountains." This picture confirms that feeling ... and could have been part of the original intent. A few years ago, I bought several books about the Standing Stones of Northern Europe. These 3 are particularly good. Burl, Aubrey; "Stone Circles". Brennan, Martin; "Stars and the Stones". Burl, Aubry; "Circles of Stone". Examples in those books confirm that the sites and/or the stones themselves were carefully chosen ... and express an artistic intent that still speaks to us from 3000 years to 7000 years in the past. Thank you.

OOOOOOH!!!! I thought you were gonna go later this year to Scotland, but it looks like we were there almost the same time. We could have joined forces, LOL. I actually told my wife as we were looking at all those photographers in the Highlands with their Canon EOS350D, that i wondered how many of them were members at this fine site....maybe i even spotted you without knowing it, LOL. #:o) And so ironical that you too uploaded a pano like me today, LOL. Looks like you beat me to everything dont ya. This one is gorgeous!!! We went looking for stonecirkles like that but never saw any..sigh. So therefor this is such a pleasure that you managed to capture some for us, LOL. Cant wait to see what else you shot. Have a wonderful weekend!!! #:O)

Marlene, it's when I see an image like this taken by a visitor to the UK that I realise how, at times, I take these sites for granted. There are those that just see shapeless rocks strewn across fields, and even if they do see a "formation" they will not understand the reasoning behind it. In my time I have travelled the Pagan path and learned much academically on the way, however...it's when you let go of the literary guidance and actually step into the netherworld that you can actually see...or to be more precise...feel "The Way". If ever you return to the UK head south west to Avebury, you will pass Stonehenge on the way, and end your journey in the Isle of Avalon, otherwise known as Glastonbury. There you will find the heart and soul of Albion. You did well with this picture...it's not uncommon for the stones to move :-)

Oh DA that was the original plan.Travel all around the UK and see these wonderful mystical places.Unfortunately with the few days that were available it was impossible.Had to choose between Stonehenge and Scotland and obviously Scotland won.But there is no doubt that I will one day go there and Glastonbury, too. And Skara Brae, too eventually. Thanks for your suggestion. :)
