Description

The WW1 troop path and tunnels on the Lagazuoi are now an open air museum. Conditions inside these tunnels must have been unthinkable, even in June there was still plenty of ice inside. Apparently the troops often slept within ear-shot of the enemy soldiers snoring, and there was hand to hand fighting within the dark labyrinth. Avalanches were common - and probably often deliberate - in 1916 a record 10 meters of snow fell, and over 10,000 souls lost their lives in them. 400 men died in a single avalanch on the Marmolada that year. There was no winner in this tragic war in the mountains. Is there ever?

During this war avalanches were used as a weapon : it was easier to shoot at the mountain than to hit a smaller target, and the result... Some always win the wars : weapon dealers...

Incredible, one asks oneself how man can go mad in this way! Stunning tribute to a senseless war that cost so many people's lives!
