Description

"Nostalgia isn't what it used to be" --Peter De Vries

Does anyone remember the magic of listening to an old-time radio program? The whine of the station, the smell of the hot vacuum tubes and the voices coming from the magic box. I don't, though I know people that do. A coworker of mine collects vintage radios as a hobby and is letting me photograph them. This was the first one he brought in for me. It is a 1945 Westinghouse H-125 "Little Jewel" Refrigerator radio. It was AM only and designed to look like the refrigerators of that era. They were given away as promotional items when you bought a new Westinghouse refrigerator, though now they can go for around $250. It was molded from Bakelite plastic and ran on 115 Volts using 6 vacuum tubes. There was a moveable handle on top for portability. This particular model has some cosmetic blemishes, but has been restored and works wonderfully. =o] ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your individualistic comments on yesterday's image, I Just Gotta Be Me.

A rare find indeed! How wonderful to be able to bring back an age when technology was changing at a slower pace and things actually worked longer than a year. Beautifully photographed, you did this one justice...Well done! A splendid wee to you! Aloha!

I was going to do something like this, but mine will be a bit different! Love this nostalgic look Kort, I think you did very well with that concept. I just visually took a trip back to 1945! :)

A wonderful image of a fine old radio - alas I do remember them; in fact I use to repair them when I was a kid :-) Some of them weighed a ton :-) - Perfect photography!

Yes, and the larger the tubes were the more power it had. And those heavy duty transformers....they weighed a ton. Tapping the tube with your fingers to test if they were defective. They generated a lot of heat. It was the good old days. Thank you modern Tech....lol Aloha

changes in consumption patterns - I never listen to the radio at home (TV/DVD etc etc) but I do when driving the car. Beautiful picture.

Superb this old radio ! I never seen this model before, but I find that the objects of the past had really an incredible charm. Technology was certainly not developed as today, but it was made to last.... I doubt that in 50 years a radio of today can still emit only one sound !!!!! Really superb, and a very beautiful photograph.

Where can I enter my dvd with mp3's? ;) Incredible in the short time we've seen these contraptions develop! This one could be sold and you'll get a free fridge with it! Excellent work, Kort, nostalgia as it should be!

A classic to be sure! I can't say as I identify with the smell of the vacuum tubes, I remember T.V.s having that smell! ;) But I do still love radio programs! I have the Hitchhikers Guide, the radio series, ripped into the pod and I love listening to it! I miss those old shows! Great bit of nostalgia! Sigh are we THAT old?

I remember listening to my Grandfathers old radio that ran on accumulator batteries and my father made what they call a crystal set and I was amazed to here music from next to nothing. My first radio was a Dansette and I would be about 19yrs at the time. Well done Kort!!! :)http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dansette-Gem-portable-radio_W0QQitemZ6556164147QQcategoryZ1442QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Wow how technology has changed ....I think I prefer the looks of this to the new boring little ones we have today but I do appreciate FM and surround sound...hehe My Mom has a bunch of tapes she bought of old radio shows and they are a riot. (If not exactly politically correct..hehe) Great entry!!!
