Kaylee has a happy little secret. Sometimes, after peeking through her daddy's bedroom door to make sure he's asleep, she sneaks down the hall to the kitchen to make herself a late-night treat. It's a little before ten-thirty. She flicks on the kitchen light and takes the biggest tumbler she can find from the cupboard next to the sink. She sets it on the bench top and fetches a bottle of milk from the fridge. She lifts the big heavy bottle with both hands and tips it gently over the tumbler, careful not to spill any drops onto the bench or the kitchen floor. Daddy would get angry if she made a mess. With the tumbler about two inches from full, she pops the milk back into the fridge and opens the pantry door. There it is! The Cottees Thick & Rich Chocolate Sauce. Yum! She licks her lips and fills the tumbler, watching with growing excitement as the thick brown syrup curls into the milk and forms a heavy sludge at the bottom. Again, careful not to spill a single drop (daddy would get so angry), she puts the cap back on the bottle and returns it to the pantry. She takes one of the long tea spoons from the cutlery drawer (sliding the drawer as gently as she can so as not to make a sound) and stirs the chocolate sauce into the milk, careful not to let the spoon clink against the sides of the glass. She can almost taste the rich creamy chocolate already, sliding down her throat and into her belly. Mmmmm! She grins with excitement. Daddy's bedroom door opens silently behind her. He steps out into the hall, squinting at the light coming down from the kitchen. He stretches, having fallen asleep at an uncomfortable angle. He cracks his neck, but doesn't find much relief. The pain has put him in a bad mood. He watches his daughter for a little while, then stalks down the hallway toward her. He fumbles in his pockets for his cigarette lighter. He leans against the kitchen door behind Kaylee and lights a cigarette. The familiar sound of the Bicco lighter has an immediate effect on the young girl. She freezes, the tumbler barely inches from her lips. For a moment she hopes it was just her mind playing tricks on her, or that it was just the sound of the fridge turning on, or a noisy cockroach disturbed by her activity in the pantry. But then her daddy's shadow falls over her. He sniffs, grinning at the back of his daughter's head as she stands rooted on the spot, frozen with fear. He cracks his knuckles.
