Description

I got tired of chasing birds around my yard with mixed results so I decided to buy some bird feeders and place them strategically around my picture window. It took a couple of days for the birds to finally find the feeders and this was one of my first visitors. To the best of my knowledge this is a female Northern Cardinal, quite common here. She never did go to the feeder and after some research I found that: Female cardinals get waited on hand-and-foot by their male partners. Their male partners pick up the seeds from the feeders and take the seeds to the females. After a few minutes the male showed up and brought her some seeds...I guess chivalry is alive and well in the bird kingdom. Thanks for you many comments on my last post, I thank all of you for taking the time to leave some feedback...Aloha to All!

When i was a wee boy, my neighbours son used to really spoil the birds with all kinds of treats. Birds would come from all around my village to feast in his yard....then one day when he felt he had tricked enough birds into coming, he took his daddys shotgun....well....was a horrible sight, let me tell ya. #:O( What a pretty pretty pretty bird this is. And your capture is perfect!!!! Having it offcentered like that on that branch with that incredible DOF behind it. Brilliant work my friend. Hope you get to have a wonderful day there in sunny Hawaii..sigh...frost outside here...UGH. #:O)

Bird feeders are useful to entice birds. However, it looks like the female cardinal are a spoilt lot and male cardinals are prepared to court! I, too, am happy that chivalry is alive and well. Not only that, in the case of cardinals, it is genetically programmed!! This is a fine picture. Not easy to take good bird pictures. You have done very well here.

Great capture. Did you get a photo of the male too? I have a few bird feeders in my backyard but all they seem to attract are the squirrels.

Excellente image, avec la branche qui axe la composition autour d'une diagonale et le tronc droite qui ferme l'image et permet l'oeil de se reconcentrer sur l'oiseau apr un parcours du regard de gauche droite. Belle harmonie des couleurs aussi / Excellent image, with the branch which centers the composition around a diagonal and the trunk on the right which closes the image and allows the eye to focus on the bird after a course of the glance from left to right. Beautiful harmony of the colors too.

Oh, my Gosh, what a beeeautiful shot !!!! You were smart to place feeders around your windows... I've done the same thing --- in front of my kitchen window though... I think they are too close, as they fly away whenever I am there to do dishes or even take their pictures. :( I'll have to get more and place them outside other windows, too :) THIS IS PERFECT!

Lovely shot of the Northern Cardinal. Great colors and nice compo. Love the moss on the tree. Just a suggestion...If that tree branch is where many of the birds sit before approaching the feeder, you might want to break off the two spindly branches jutting out toward the camera. They will always obstruct your view of the bird somewhat and be out of focus most times as well.
