Description

Once on the ridge it's not so far to the Eggishorn. Many tourists have come here ascending the mountain by cable railway and only few of them dare to go to the top because the track is made of large boulders (with sizes of 30-60 cm, 1-2 feet), not easy when you don't have appropriate boots. The last meters are still hard on me, the air is thin and my body tells me this is not the first effort of the day. But slowly I achieve the goal of the day, at last! Once again tears of pure happiness, with a stunning vista on the Grosse Aletschgletscher seen from the Eggishorn (2927 m, 9602 ft). At http://www.eggishorn.ch/rundsicht/eggishorn_sommer.htm you can see a fabulous Quicktime Virtual Reality movie, enabling you to look freely around in any direction. It shows a bit what can be seen on this top. Imagine the width of the glacier, in the middle of the picture it is about 1.5 kilometers (almost 1 mile) wide! The glacier is about 23 km (more than 14 miles) long, has a surface of about 125 km2 (about 48 square miles) and moves down with about 50 cm/day (20 inches/day). An immense highway of ice! Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 35 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

Excellent shot once again Jan-Carel. Pitty that the 'big boys' (Jungfrau, Mch, Eiger) are hidden by the clouds, but I think that the big 'Autobahn' was exciting to view anyway!!
