Description

I've always been a big admirer of vintage style comics. Pre-1940's. The artistic style was so sophisticated compared to modern stuff. As a kid, I had a book of various old comic strips which had one of Little Nemo and his Walking Bed. Little Nemo in Slumberland was a British newspaper comic from 1905 to 1914. Each strip had Nemo in a strange dream and waking up in bed afterwards. Winsor McCay was a wonderful artist and in looking for pictures and info on him on the internet, found out lots of interesting things. Some give him credit for influencing early surrealism. Some say Walt Disney outright plagerized his ideas. I didn't find any pictures of the walking bed which I remember in my book, but I found a number of them with the regular bed and so I improvised. *** Made the bed in AmapiPro. Buildings by Baument. Placed an almost transparent white plane in front of the curb to deaden the background.

I've got a collection of the complete Nemo strips in hardcover. McCay did amazingly detailed architectural drawings in his backgrounds, and made the first animated cartoon, I believe (Gertie the Dinosaur). You have captured the spirit of his work well here.

Entertaining and informative. I'll have to try that trick with the white plane.

just as I remember from the comic, I always thought it was the most artistic of comics. you did a great job on the walking legs!

Wonderful work and I now understand or can put a name to the style as I have always to admired it but just coulnot think to call it anything but poster art.

Terrific style, and I appreciate your notes about the original comic - makes me want to look it up somewhere! I also like the trick re: the white plane in front of the background; that has real possibilities...
