Description
The architectural splendour of the temples built by the dynasty of Chandela kings (9th - 12th century) in central India, is world renowned. Of the 85 temples built over 200 years, only 20 survive in good condition. The temples are richly embellished with sculptures. These temples are considered a 'World Heritage Site' by UNESCO.
Top Picture:
An apsara (a celestial nymph) on the outside wall of the Parasvanath temple ( 10th century).
Here is a much photographed sculpture of a graceful dancer bending down to tie her ankle bells. People often pose a question whether women in those days were really so scantily dressed. No, they were, in fact, quite modestly dressed. The sculptors of that age, however, wanted to emphasize the sensuality of the human form. I guess it was a matter of artistic licence. They endowed their women with ample bosoms and slender waists.
Bottom Picture:
Removing a thorn (10th century), Khajuraho.
An outstanding sculpture of a woman removing a thorn. Her leg is supported by an attendant. Noteworthy is the handbag slung over her shoulder and that of the attendant.
I want to thank all of you who have veiwed and left comments. I appreciate your effort.

Such work was as much a 'gift' to the gods as a point in worship, like the windows in a medieval church. It not time and patience but a different system of understanding, art in the service of the sacred, not commerce. Beautifully done.
