Description

A fine study of an amorous couple, 10th century It is generally, erroneously believed that these temples are full of just erotic figures. The preception is far from the truth. While there are generally more numbers of amorous sculptures here than in other temples of that period in India, the erotic sculptures represent only a small fraction of the sculptural excellence of the Khajuraho temples. These 'mithun' or erotic sculptures represent the accepted practice of that era , of course in private, of celebrating vitality, energy and youth. In this sculpture the body movement and the expression of total submission indicates a passionate moment in the lovers' embrace. A statue of Shiva in Khajuraho. 10th century In this exquisite sculpture of Shiva, the garceful pose is complemented with fine carvings of jewelry and graceful sculpting of the fingers. All the sculptures in Khajuraho have been carved out of stone slabs. It is a wonder that after 1000 years no detail has been lost. The kings of that era not only patronized art in every form but also actively engaged the government in providing employment to thousands of artisans. Thanks for viewing and for your supportive comments. I truly appreciate your effort. ~Suresh~

They may not be the majority, but they are certainly the sculptures that get shown the most...and for good reason. Very cool shot of the amorous couple. Loving this series!! ;^]

You had a good idea to explain that! This is true that a lot of people (like me) used to think that the main topic of those sulptures was erotism... This is probably due to the effect of the OPPOSITE behaviour of our historical religion which is based on the prohibition of sexuality, the source of all frustration and the origin of sexual deviants in our catholic society. Of course, we focus on that forbidden thing in a non-conscious way. An interesting matter of discussion and, as always, high quality pictures... Bravo dear!

Hi!WOOOOWWWWW!!!That pure wonder!!It is really impressing and moving that of the much human beings centuries it does they have been able with immense sacrifice and toil to create some wonderful scultutte things and rich things of precious details! You captured all the glamour and the magic also of the smallest details! The philosophy and the religion of these rich story of things places is very interesting and full of cue of meditation and of discussion and in the same time is distant things from the culture and Italian traditions. And therefore in this case from the culture, traditions and catholic teachings. Thanks my dear friend Suresh to give me this wonderful opportunity of vision and to know better these Indian jewels and these your sublime masterpieces!!Have a very nice day!Very big hugs!
