Description

"A perpetual holiday is a good working definition of hell." --George Bernard Shaw

I took this photo of my daughter as she stood on the stairs behind a Christmas display in our house. But rather than put me in the holiday spirit, I found it rather creepy. The slight blur from the long handheld exposure, the gloomy reddish light, her head partially hidden behind the stair rails, and her eyes dark sockets made me think more of recent horror movies rather than the wonder of a young child experiencing Christmas for the very first time. Even the playful ornaments, cheery garland lights, and figurines from classic children's holiday movies seem cast in an ominous context. Bizarre. How do you interpret this scene? What does it make you feel? ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your indistinct comments on my last photo, Hallucinatory Promenade.

At first glance a cute fuzzy picture, but on closer inspection, I kind of agree with you. The creepiest thing is that Sponge Bob hanging in the background..

That SpongeBob comment is priceless! And I think you are both right - this really IS creepy! Whether you got the effect you intended is pointless because, maybe you could not have created this if you had tried to create it... Anyway, really, this is amazing! +VOTE+

Such a wispy-haired sweetie! But yes, her eyes disappear into fathomless pits ibn this lighting.

It is a bit creepy. But it is also adorable. The fuzzyness makes her look like a little ghost. By the way, I love your little Rudolph characters. My fav movie of all! :)

Ooooh...i agree totally with you Kort. Especially those eyes gave me the creeps. And since those dark things are the only features you can see of her face...she kinda reminds me of an alien, lol. Not that ive ever seen an alien..but i suppose thats what i imagine they would look like. And i cant help but notice good old Bob hangling and dangling there as well...and that is also quite scary that you would decorate your house with him, lol. Ive rambled long enough fellow MAS-member...i shall end by saying that its one helluva compo that holds alot to be discovered. Now enjoy your evening. #:O)

Ghostly child and bars; or, the wish of xmas is children's wishes, so not creepy but a dream from xmas.

The context in one's mind plays an important role, since this one did not invoke any creepy feelings at all. Isn't it the horror movie that makes us look under our bed before sleeping...? :)

I am not exaggerating when I say that this image creeps me out!!! I thought you had heavily effected this, until I read the text! Her eyes are like vacant soulless pits! The pose of her "Dead-center" and staring vacuously into the camera....SHIVER Yikes!!! You called this one right! I am sure she is adorable, but this picture is not promoting those aspects! ; ) Thanks for sharing her "Dark-side!"

I think that you ave forgotten the TOS about the using of children: " No child will be injured during the making of the phot" and you, you didn 't hesitate to throw your own daughter ehind the barels of a cell, direct to jail (lol)

It makes me feel as if the child has woken up in the night and finds all the christmas dolls have come alive and chattering with each other and the child watches them with an innocence which comes naturally only to children. That was my very first reaction.

At first glance I thought that she was a doll sitting inside some sort of ceremonial cage, so yes it IS creepy. It doesn't help that we can't see her face clearly either. Nevertheless it is quite a fascinating pic, even though it is a bit out of focus, although I don't think that matters much. I'd like to see you experiment more with this theme!

Do I get the impression that Europeans (except for Andreas) think that this picture is rather sweet (if a bit blury) whereas it is only the N. Americans (+Zacko) who find it 'creepy'? PS: In my familly, we rarely enjoy Xmas without at least one huge argument - lol
