Description

Sorry, I have not been able to comment on your pictures. All my grandchildren are here for holidays and I want to spend time with them as I do not see them often. They will be here till the first week of Jan. I seek your understanding. I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Top Picture: A woman applying kohl to her eyes. There are various sculptures in Khajuraho temples of women beautifying and adorning themselves. It gives an insight into the beauty aids of the day 1000 years ago in India. On either side of the woman are Sharduls. Shardul is a mythical beast , These are often interspersed between deities, apsaras and other figures through out Khajuraho temples' sculptures, . Shardul represents the beastiality in humans. The man riding it, about to be swallowed, represents ignorance and the one trying to kill it represents knowledge. Sharduls come with many faces such as lion, parrot, elephant , peacock etc. Bottom Picture: Kandariya Mahadev temple. (11th century), dedicated to Lord Shiva. The kings of the Chandela dynasty who ruled between 9th and 13th century, left no records or rock edicts about their kingdom or why the temples were built. The village of Khajuraho (pop. 3000) is like any of the million villages in India, tucked away among the forest land in central India.
