Thanks for your comments on yesterday's Hale-Bopp shot.
This was shot on the same night. It's a 3 minute 50mm piggy back exposure on Fuji Super G 800 film at f2.8. You can see how much the scope moved during the exposure by looking at the trees. The sky moves fast.
The comet's tail consisted of gas and dust. The tail was split because the two materials had different masses and thus behaved differently in the Sun's gravity. In this shot the Double Cluster can be seen in the upper right.
There are a lot of flaws about this 9 year old image, but I did try to help it today with some processing. It was shot very close to the horizon where the air is thick and mucky, plus it was still twilight and I might have picked up some light pollution from Seattle. The other flaws are obvious, mostly to do with the scan and graininess. Even so, it's a good memory for me.

no way !! i cant even imagine getting this kind of shot .. who gets an actual picture of a comment .. i think it is a rare thing and this gets my vote... well i sure dont see comets every day the only comet i see it comet cleaner !! lol AWESOME!

This is soooo pretty. I wonder how many stars are visible here? Since you have the original, would you mind blowing it up and counting them for us? :-)

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!! Look at all those stars, i think thats even cooler than the comet. The only thing i suggest you do is clone out the bigger stars you see shining through the trees. They almost look painted in. Cool cool cool shot! Have a great day. #:O)

Wooooooow! Fantastic capture of this comet! Light pollution can be quite a disturbance yeah. Very impressive work, love to see all the details! :)

Beautiful. The 3 minute exposure and the way it makes the sky look like it has about 10 times the amount of stars is lovely. I wouldn't clone any of them out. It looks really cool just the way it is.
