Description

The Post Bridge Dartmoor Clapper bridges are unique to the rivers of Dartmoor and Exmoor and this is one of the most perfect existing specimens of the old clapper bridges. Here we have four piers supporting four great slabs, one at each end and two side by side in the centre. The single slabs are about 15 feet by 7 feet, and the bridge, which stands some 7 feet above the river, is 42 feet 8 inches long. It is weird and picturesque, and seems the proper accompaniment to the sparkling river that glitters below in its granite bed, but the full effect is somewhat marred by the proximity of the more prosaic modern road bridge and telegraph poles. It has withstood the ravages of the River Dart for centuries I was disappointed to discover some ancient stones nearby had been destroyed by vandals.

History at it's best. We are blessed to still have a few of these great old bridges around to show us some of the days gone by.

I have to say I have never seen one of these bridges, it looks quite remarkable, I used to stay at a campsite just outside Ashburton, close to Buckfasteigh, wonderful looking scene.

Love these historical stone bridges. This one fits the category. There is an unmistakable romanticism about bridges like this. Lovely capture in an ideal setting.

A wonderful photo. I've never seen a bridge like this. Thanks for the info. Sad that vandals destroy things that can never be replaced.

Lovely capture of this part of Dartmoor and Exmoor! Never seen clapper bridges like you show them here! Fabulous work! Too bad vandals can't leave the world intact, the burden of 'civilisation' venting the immature stresses etc. Congrats, Coord! Gorgeous work, Danny! :)

Wonderful and very interesting shot Danny. Incredible to see an old bridge as this one. I don't think it reminds a lot of them, building in the same way, in the world ! I love the quiet atmosphere of this place. I hope it'll be there for other centuries ;o)))) Superb shot again my friend. Hugs. V
