Description
The HMS Victory is most famous for her role as the flagship of Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. One of the oldest commissioned warship in the world, she currently lies in No 2 Dry Dock at Portsmouth Naval Base in England under going restoration.
I had originally created a low poly model of the vessel for someone who is developing a sailing ship simulation. After that was completed, I enhanced the model with more details and better textures for rendering in Max. The Max version of the ship is still relatively low poly, weighing in at about 50K faces if you exclude the base, sails and the flags. All of the rigging and some of the detail objects such rudder chains, anchor ropes, hammock nets, etc were all done with renderable splines (finally found a use for that feature besides hair).
The main reference I used to build the ship was the book "Anatomy of the Ship series: The 100-Gun Ship Victory" by John McKay. I also had pictures of the actual ship and of museum quality models to help me with the texturing.
The ship is now available in the MarketPlace in the 3D Models section.

Holy frijole! Was this rendered in MAX or Brazil, or Final Render? My gawd... and I have also never seen renderable splines look as realistic as this... and how did you do the sails?

maldowns : LOL, well then I should have at least one buyer then as I am thinking of keeping the price around 15$ or less ;) Valandar : Just plain Max scanline with some dome lighting. I heard Final Render is quite fast but I am still stuck in Max 3.1 so it will be a while before I can try it. The sails were done with a displacement map and all the renderable splines have a texture applied to them (although you only really notice it on the anchor rope)

Fantastic Recreation! I espesially love the attention to details with the hundreds of spline ropes and phenominal sails (Espessially how you took to the time to model them drawn up aswell). A broadcast worthy job. (You're selling yourself short with this model set at a price tag of $15, A model of this quality and accuracy can easly be sold for hundreds by a big name company like Viewpoint!) Thought about making a scene or animation with it? Keep It Up! =DBZ=

Zowie! That is wicked sh#T!! This puts the Max proggie back on the map. It would be cool if you could have a anime or pic showing the guns going off.

How long did it take to make the ship? About 80-100 hrs to create the model and textures. There were also a bunch of misc hours (~20 hr) that went in to reading books, interpreting the plans and searching on the internet for pictures. Of course the hours are still climbing as I struggle with this conversion process!
