Description
Every year, the momma kildeer... (or is it her daughter, or granddaughter?)... lays her eggs on the ground in nearly the same place. You would think they would be easy to find from looking at the splotches and spots. They're not. Having done this every year, you would think that I could walk right to the place and find the nest in a matter of moments. Some years I see the nest fairly quickly, some years I do not find it at all. For those who don't have the pretty little kildeer in your area (you'll have to google it), she feigns injury and cries and lays on the ground flailing her wings, pretending to be hurt, all the while moving a little further away from the nest, thereby leading predators and thieves away from her precious and very vulnerable eggs. It's quite a site to see this brave and valiant selfless act. I hurredly snapped these shots, for I did not want to make the mother any more anxious than necessary. Thanks very much for the click.... I appreciate your views and comments.... Maria

Hello Maria. We have Golden and Ringed Plovers in the UK. The ringed plover is very similar to your killdee. Google to see our species!!

I see this bird often along our golf course ponds, but I had no idea where they laid their eggs! Bravo, and thanks for the pics! A different Easter Egg for sure!

nice shots. the kildeer's distracting display sounds similar to that of our ringed plover (see Catriona2 comment), whose nests are very difficult to spot. i think they prefer pebbles...

Wonderful nest/egg photos. I've tried to find their nests also, and have never been successful. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing to see the variety in the world of birds, every continent with its own bird breeds, sometimes with appearences on other continents as well! Gorgeous work!
