Interesting image Hew. Excellent conceptualization. Usually the term "By A Nose" expresses that the winner won "by a nose". Here, the man is pulling his nose back, and that is in keeping with the self imposed limits you mention in your comment. Sometimes we are afraid of sticking our necks out, but it may only require sticking our nose out to get the prize.
