Description

The series: Some friends and I went to De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust a while back - what an experience! There were so many beautiful animals there - cheetas, wild dogs, caracals etc. Hopefully these pictures will relate just a little bit of the beauty that we experienced. This shot: African Wild Dog (Lycaon Pictus). The name Lycaon Pictus means "Painted wolf-like animal" and they are, as the name suggests, more related to wolves than they are to dogs. Lore has it that the Creator was painting all the animals with their colors but the elusive wild dog kept on hiding. So when He was finished with the other animals, He only had odds of paint left and used them to color these guys. Another interesting note is that each wild dog's fur pattern is unique - like fingerprints... only all over their bodies :) They are so cute. Cute... and deadly! As with cheetahs, there is an alpha female that runs the whole show. Yep, the girls are in charge of the packs! They make the funniest noise when they're about to be fed, almost like a yelp. Such unusual patterns on this wild dog!!!!!! Interesting info too about the fur pattern being like fingerprints!!!! We are all unique creatures in this world!!! Thanks for sharing this image!!!!!!
