Description

At this point the River Bar Pilot has already taken his place on the Auto Carrier in order to get the large ship across the Columbia River Bar, and into the Pacific Ocean. The River Boat Pilot is returning to the home base. It is reported that an auto carrier can bring about 1000 new cars into the Port of Portland on each trip. Thank you for viewing and make this the best weekend of your summer. Best wishes for all.

The second ship in the background is a freighter carrying cargo to Portland, Oregon. They are only about 1/8 of a mile apart, which shows how very large the Auto Carrier really is. Mile=5,280 feet; 1,760 yards; or1.6097 kilometers.

Whoa, at first I thought I was looking at the reincarnation of Noah's Ark! Hardly any superstructure at all on the auto carrier. Every time I see the River Boat Pilot I think of Popeye the Sailor Man. Good capture, ClaudiaLee! Hugs back at you!!!

I think they carry around 15,000 cars. when I lived in Houston they would unload at the Houston ship channel and they would be going 24 hrs a day for more than a week unloading the cars non stop. excellent picture and I love seeing the large ships. recently one sank. the crew managed to get off but the cars are with moby dick now
