Description

I would like to dedicate this desert scene to Ionel. This work was inspired by his Oasis.

thumb_1213799.jpg

It is my first upload created with Terragen. Ionel was a tremendous help when I had difficulty in creating a realistic sand surface.  The trees, Gemsbuck and skull were copied from my photographs. I am not happy with the appearance of the water and depth of the scene and may redo it later when my skills are better developed. The Kalahari desert was a big influence in my life and I may try my hand at more renders in future.

Any comments and recommendations are highly appreciated - I hope you don't tell me to stop though, LOL!

As a first upload, it's a good work. I suggest some additional layers of sand, with slight variations of color (but not much). In a desert scene, there's multiple colors in the dunes, if you look carefully.

excellent first post!! try reducing the value (alot) on the reflectivity curve slider in the water window...this may enhance the look of the water....keep at it youre doing great!!

Wonderful first effort,Piet! It's lovely! I especially like the color combination you've used.I can't give any technical pointers, except to say what may help make it a drop more realistic.I think the gemsbuck need a bit of a shadow to their left, and the water's edge could look a bit more jagged/shaded in places. It's a bit too uniform.I wish I could say how to do that.I'm sorry,I know nothing of this medium.Anyway,it's wonderful.I hope you continue with this. All the very best to you.-M :^)

I have seen many Terragen images, by people doing it for a long time....none as good as this!! I think your time in the bush has given you a keen insight into these kinds of environments. This is awesome!!!

Awesome creation!!! Oom you should stick to these... I love all the extra little bits you've added in. I think the moon is a bit much but otherwise the whole setup is awesome!!! About your "dislike" for the water - I think it's just out of place really...

Conventional wisdom has it that to achieve the feeling of vastness and expanse, as in a desert scene, the horizon should be no more than a third of the way up the scene. Yeh, maybe more sand layers of varying smoothness, and perhaps some haze to emphasize depth of field. On post work it's a good idea to slightly blur the edges of objects to help them blend into the scene. But having said all that, this is a beautiful scene with an excellent terrain and wonderfully vibrant colours. For a first Terragen upload, it's very well done.

For me this is the difference between taking a photo and making a photo. At the end of the day, it is about being an artist and enjoying your creativity. Nice !!

Other than the moon's size, you could have fooled me,Piet. I thought it was real at first glance.
