Witchcraft. The name alone conjures nightmares. But it is important to note that not all Witches are evil. Obviously, our very founder was schooled as a Warlock before his conversion to the worship of Athena. Others of the famed Silver Gryphon have over the years been Witches and Warlocks. The possession of the skills of Witchcraft, do not, in and of themselves, make one evil.

Simply put, Witchcraft is the combination of arcane, divine and druidic magics, along with a healthy (or unhealthy depending on your perspective) smattering of erotic magic. Some of the special, secret order spells that are learned only by Witches are tainted with exceptional power which has led many to believe that the first great Witches were skilled in Krell magic, if not actual Dark Krell themselves. The long and dark history of Mantari, the first Witch Queen, and the exceptional powers she wielded, would tend to support this theory. However, due in no small part to her dark deeds, and the vile acts done by those that followed in her wake, Witchcraft as an institution has been outlawed in most of the civilized nations of the world. The penalty for those found guilty of Witchcraft varies from a slight fine and a slap on the wrist to death by hanging, burning or drowning. Burning Witches is a particular treat for the non-magical folk of Hesterland and the religious zealots of Avandor. I understand that in parts of Slovosan and Prussak on Hesterland any spellcaster caught using his or her art in public is likely to be found guilty of Witchcraft, no matter their particular craft.

But that isn't the reason we're here. This class will teach you about the darker side of Witchcraft, the real reason it is universally feared and reviled, and naturally, the various ways to tell a Witch from a common Mage or Priestess. First thing to know about Witches is that they never travel alone. A Witch is nothing without her coven, and in that is their greatest strength and their greatest weakness. A lone Witch is more often than not an outcast, shunned or hunted by her own sisters. These few are most useful in infiltrating and overcoming the coven. But be careful. Witches are seductive, charming, beguiling spellcasters, who will possess your mind and drive you mad. They can command an entire army to stop fighting in the middle of a battle, and enthrall even the mightiest and most devout paladin, binding him to their will. They can and will trick you. Anything you can think of, you can bet the Witch has already developed a defense against it. The best weapon against a Witch is a powerful and skilled Mystic on your side, someone with enough magical power to defeat the Witch's most dangerous spells.
