Description
From Mssr Messier's list of 'things what aren't comets n'est pas' a picture of number one in his list - the Crab Nebula.
This is a supernova remnant. The star blew itself to tiny bits in 1054 just before William the Conquerer invaded England and started the English/French love hate relationship.
The remnants of the star are now a tiny lump of neutrons wizzing around at a mind boggling rate. The neatrons emit radio waves and this was the first (so called) Pulsar discovered by Jocelyn Bell. She wrote in her note book LGM (Little Green Men), so another Astronomer with a sense of humour.
Taken with a dedicated CCD camera for astronomy mounted on an 8" Newtonian telescope. 30x120 second exposures stacked and averaged.
The colours are real.
